There are 2 connections to the throttle lever on the throttle body under the hood. One is for the gas pedal and the other is for the cruise control. The connection for the cruise control is the lower connection. The cable has a very weak retainer system. The retainer clips wear until the cable breaks away from the throttle. To get at this area, you must remove the plastic shield that is held on with 2 push pins. Just pry the push pins up and out of their holes and the cover comes loose. You must either replace the cruise control cable (~$35.00) or reattach the cable end and use a wire tie to keep it from coming off again.
SOURCE: 2004 ford taurus cruise control not working even
With the help of this site, I was able to solve my problem, of my cruise control not working on my 2004 Taurus. It was the cruise control cable, under the plastic cover in the engine compartment, it had come disconnected! I reconnected it andI plastic ty-rapped it, to ensure it didn't come apart again. It works fine now!
Thanks for saving me $$$$$$, hope this helps someone else, as well.
