There are 2 connections to the throttle lever on the throttle body under the hood. One is for the gas pedal and the other is for the cruise control. The connection for the cruise control is the lower connection. The cable has a very weak retainer system. The retainer clips wear until the cable breaks away from the throttle. To get at this area, you must remove the plastic shield that is held on with 2 push pins. Just pry the push pins up and out of their holes and the cover comes loose. You must either replace the cruise control cable (~$35.00) or reattach the cable end and use a wire tie to keep it from coming off again.

SOURCE: 2004 ford taurus cruise control not working even

With the help of this site, I was able to solve my problem, of my cruise control not working on my 2004 Taurus. It was the cruise control cable, under the plastic cover in the engine compartment, it had come disconnected! I reconnected it andI plastic ty-rapped it, to ensure it didn't come apart again. It works fine now!

Thanks for saving me $$$$$$, hope this helps someone else, as well.

2004 ford taurus cruise control not working even though the light on the dash comes on when the switch is engaged

The cruise control cable has probably fallen off the throttle lever under the hood. The retainer vibrates loose over time. Either replace the cable or find a way to keep the cable attached to the throttle lever.

Taurus 2000 cruise control

i've been told it's speed sensors. I have the same on my 1999, but my light flashes when i try to engage. And 1 out of 10 times, it engages and I can cruise. Just not worth it to me to fix. Ford never claimed there was a problem.

Cruise control will not engage even though the indicator on the Cruise on/off switch is illuminated.

Check that your brake lights are staying off. Brake light switch will put your cruise control into coast mode.

Power items on the fritz

Hi,

1. there should be a 5A fuse for the dashoard lights in the fuse panel. Yes it may be cause by the dimmer switch.

2. Cruise control stop working. this may seem funny to you but make sur all your rear brake lights work. The way Ford cruise control system works, it uses resistance to engage the cruise, with a burnt brake light, the resistance changes and the module will not recognise the input.

3. try replacing the relay box on top of the radiator.

Hope this helps you out
