Most modern cars have the pump in the fuel tank. If you look under the car at the back of the tank you will likely see a circular plug with 2 or 3 hoses and wires coming out, that is the pump.
Could be a lot of things. Get the engine scanned for any codes. Look at fuel trim and O2 sensors, etc.
Could be bad gas, dirty filter, fuel pump.
A common issue on these engines is the plenum connecting the throttle body to the intake cracks. Causes rough idling/stalling.
Also look at air filter, MAS Air Flow sensor. But reading your fuel trim values should help here.
According to my parts guide, the fuel pump for your 97 Olds Aurora fits only that and the 97 Buick Riviera's and nothing else. The pump for a 99 Park avenue comes up as a different part number. Hope this helps!
The GM 1995 Aurora repair manual, says to use the access hole under the
carpet in the back right corner of the trunk. You are best to buy a new fuel sender locking nut or ring at the
dealer for about $8.
Forgot to add this - to relieve the fuel pressure, just use the
press the center of valve on the fuel rail (for pressure testing) and a
rag to catch the dribble. Really no big deal.
The good news first!! No need to drop fuel tank!! Lift carpet from trunk ... just in front & a little to the right of spare wheel well is an access cover. When screws and cover are removed you have complete access to top of tank with pump and sender assembly mounted below a twist off clamp ring. When replacing Delphi fuel pump unit make sure you also replace gasket. The bad news!!! New pump unit over $300!!! ... try junk yards.
