Check engine light is on and the car is acting strange; backfiring and missing while driving. Have taken it to two different garages, changed spark plugs and wires and still having problem. What could be wrong?
The car is a 1992 Chevy Lumina.
You need to find the source of the check engine light. Fortunately on the '92 you have OBD-I and can check this yourself. This site explains it pretty well...

but the code list is incomplete.
This place gives a more complete code list

Or this place has codes too.

The error code can point you in the right direction for which engine system has the problem, but you will need to run some checks to nail down the specific cause of the code.
