Smell of burning rubber rear offside wheel area

I have just acquired a 2008 CRV (petrol, right hand drive) and regualrly notice smell of hot/burning rubber from the rear off side wheel area. It happens on short journeys as well as long, but not every time, and happens whether 4 wheel drive has been engaged or not. It does not appear to be brake related. Any ideas?

Hi there! Check out this link.
http://www.automotivehelper.com/topic175126.htm
this link will take you to a forum full of people with CRV's who are having the exact same problem. It seems to be with almost every year of the CRV as well. Unfortunately Honda has no explanation or solution for this problem. I have a 2009 CRV and have not had this smell, but I have been having a ton of other problems with it. I have been incredibly dissapointed with this car, and will never get another Honda. I hope you have better luck than I, and be careful with it cause I think there are some serious problems with these CRV's. Good Luck!

Burning smell coming from offside rear wheel Honda crv 2004

Could be incorrect brake piston seal size that is binding and not allowing the brake to release when not in use.. OR (more likely) your handbrake cable / mechanism is (partially/fully) locked on that wheel..

Inside of right rear tire is covered in axle fluid. Is car safe to drive til next paycheck? This morning I started noticing a burning rubber smell. Not making any noise though.

you can drive it but be aware that the oil is on the brake pads/shoes on that side which creates poor braking. the smell is the gear oil getting hot and burning off. depends when your next paycheck is. would not let it go beyond a week or two.

Smell of burning rubber on offside rear wheel. Intermittent. Kia Ceed 113bhp 1.6

I think you are on the right track with the hand brake/ parking brake. A vehicle can still drive if its slightly engaged and you would notice some sort of burning smell from the area. Try engaging the brake and disengaging the brake a few times and see if it releases completely. There may be an issue with the line causing it to "stick" here and there. Good luck! Cars are complicated but troubleshooting the small things before spending hundreds in labour is always wise!

Check your valve cover gaskets, bet they are leaking and that is burning off.

My CR-V has a burning rubber smell from the offside rear wheel. What's the problem?

Is the tire worn from rubbing against anything?
Check your rubber boots on the CV joints of that wheels half shaft to makes sure they are not cracked. If the grease leaks out, there will be a lot of heat build up, and stuff will roast. Check wheel bearings while you are at it.

Petrol smell from engine

I think you might be only intermittantly noticing it.
Check around the fuel injectors for signs of wetness as soon as you notice it again. Failure of the metal-plastic junctions is pretty common. Their expansion and contraction rates are different so eventually, the seal can fail.
