Try starting it in nuetral. if it starts everytime then the shifting switch is going out. If nothing changes then maybe the ignition switch is going bad and just by chance it starts by wiggling the shifter.
If this is a manual trans maybe the nuetral safety switch on the clutch pedal is going out.
This is a picture of the ignition switch, This is the electrical part of the assembly. The key and tumbler are missing because you reuse you existing one.
This is usually what goes out when you turn the key to crank and it starts intermittanly. These cost around $50 or so
