You're going to lose some coolant, so have a bucket or other container, and some fresh coolant ready. Follow the upper radiator hose to the point where it's connected to the engine. The hose is clamped to a metal housing (water inlet) which is bolted to the engine. Remove the bolts (not the hose) and lift the housing to expose the thermostat (may require a little prying with a screwdriver or similar tool). Note how the old thermostat is fitted (which end is up), lift it out of the engine, and then remove all traces of gasket from the housing and the engine. Install the new thermostat and gasket, replace the bolts, add coolant as necessary, and you're done.

Turned on the heat, it blows warm but does not get hot. takes awhile as well to warm up but seems mixed with cool air.

if its been a while since the thermostat has been changed then change the thermostat first.this maybe all it is.then when the car has run enough so it should be hot then grab the heater hoses they should be the same temperature.if not then the heater core is plugged and will need to be replaced.however this is rare on a camry but does happen.

Where is thermostat on 1997 Camry?

It should be at the engine end of the large rubber hose that runs from the radiator to the engine. This hose normally connects to a metal piece that will be rounded on the top. The thermost will be inside this metal piece. It is usually held in place with a couple of bolts.

Changing a thermostat

Follow the big water hose on top of the radiator to the engine blogk. Where it goes into the block there should be 2 or 3 bolts to remove the housing. When you change the thermostat you should also change the gasket. I hope this helps.you.
