Take another look at the battery, clean the posts and the terminal ends. Charge the battery, or jumpstart from another vehicle, and allow it to run for 5 to 10 minutes. Shut the vehicle off and see if it will start again. If not you will most likely need to replace the battery.

I have a 1994 mercury cougar that won't shift out of park. the brake lights do work. please help

This is wiring for shift interlock. Some makes and models have a bypass button close to shifter in order to bypass shift interlock. I don't know if your vehicle has that button or not? I looked at info for 6 cylinder.

Car won't start, battery light flashes and engine light is on

check battery connections for corrosion and see if they are loose by trying to twist the terminal if loose or corroded there is not a good connection to battery if corroded then simply use baking soda and water if no baking soda use coca cola.ok turn your key into run position leave in run pop hood take a screw driver or key to starter solenoid on fender by using a metal tool touching the two connections together hold and see if it starts hold for only max of 5 second bursts if it does ignition switch is bad

Mercury cougar wont start

My first suspicion is the battery connections may be lose and also the battery may now be run down. If you take the terminal connections off and clean them and the terminal posts so that they are shiny clean and charge the battery you can try again. If the car starts, that was the problem. If it doesn't, then look for the starter solenoid and lose connections there and also look toward the starter next. A tech with a volt meter can run independent checks and narrow it down further but having good connections and a charged battery are necessary to get started with the other tests.

1999 mercury cougar. won't start...cranks...battery ok.

V6 ? 4CYL? Have you verified SPARK? Did anyone check the "fuel pump inertia switch?" Its in the right front kick panel. If it was a "Anti-theft Issue" the light would be on or flashing.

Make sure it is in P or N. You may try hitting the starter when someone is holding the key in the start position.
