Most vehicles today come with many added luxuries and accommodation's , a few of which i might add can cause severe issues such as the tilt steering column .
over time and use they are taken for granted and i can assure you the tilt steering is one of my most ventured of all issues as it controls the 4 ways the turn signals the headlights the cruise control the windshield wipers , included issues related to the brake lights as well most every thing power to this above mentioned and explained .
even though its an added luxury and should under any and all circumstances preform without issues , it without doubt will over the use and continued use of this feature breakdown ...my suggestion is use it sparingly and with actually holding the wheel while allowing it up or down to the proper fit of the driver , many drivers i have seen simply hit the lever and let it fly full speed into the 'let me outta here" position by flipping the lever allowing the wheel to at full force go into the upward position , and without regard to the bending of the wires within the column as well as the same way with jump in grab the lever and pull it into position ( Remember these wires are very,very Thin Extremely Thin )...I can " Guarantee " you within 1 year or less of using the tilt feature in this manor will result in Inoperable function to 1 or more or all of my above mentioned functions .
My suggestion for the proper use is slowly and with ease lower or raise your tilt wheel into position and i give it a much lesser breakdown status than would be in any other form of use .
In an era when different models of car with different wheel sizes could be accommodated by simply changing the final drive ratio, it made sense for all transmissions to use direct drive as the highest gear. As noted earlier, however, this would cause the engine to operate at too high an RPM for efficient cruising.
