If you have all the proper tools, including jack and jack stands it can be done, however, keep in mind that sometimes the bolts can seize in the bushings making it difficult to remove them. But that does not always happen. It's a fairly straight forward procedure though. Just remove your tire after properly jacking your vehicle up and placing it on jack stands. Some special tools you will need are tie rod end seperator, ball joint removal tool, these tools can sometimes be rented from parts stores like Autozone. I would also recommend buying a repair manual for your truck, especially, if you've never done this before, and read over the entire procedure before starting just to make sure you have everything you need. Nothing worse than starting a job on your car only to find out half way in you need something else. In brief, after removing your tires, seperate your tie rod ends, ball joints from steering knuckle, sway bar links and remove the bolts for your control arms. Also if this is a 4 wheel drive system your axles will have to be seperated fron your steering knuckles. Installation is just reversal of removal. But do get a manual before starting it's worth the $20. Hope that helps, gl.

How to replace a lower ball joint on 2004 mercury mountaineer?

Remove the brake caliper by removing the two bolts that connect it to the steering knuckle. Remove the lower ball joint cotter pin and retaining nut. Pry the steering knuckle up and away from the lower ball joint. Unscrew the grease fitting from the bottom of the lower control arm. Press the lower ball joint out of the control arm using a ball joint remover set.
Press the lower ball joint into the control arm using a ball joint installation tool. Remove the block of wood supporting the upper control arm. Install a new cotter pin through the ball joint stud.Install the grease fitting on the bottom of the ball joint. Use a c-clamp to push the piston back into the brake caliper. Reinstall the wheel assembly. Here you can find the quality parts http://www.buyautoparts.com/steering_system.htm

2000 mountaineer i know the upper and lower ball joints are bad also the sway bar links.can i change just the ball joints or do i have to change the whole control arm with them Thanks Rob

Try Autozone or Oreillys for the parts. If they list them you can do just the ball joints. I had the same story with my 2002 Mercury. The dealer parts guys told me the "A" arms were 1 piece with the joint; yet the shop manager in the same dealership told me the balljoints are separate.
I had no problem in getting just the joints nor did the alignment shop I ended up with.

They swaybar links are aftermarket too.

Replace upper ball joint 2003 silverado 1500

The ball joints on both 2wd and 4wd upper are pressed in you need to remove snap ring and using a hammer pop out the old one out this is after you seperate the upper arm from the spindle. To install the new ball joint you should use a ball joint press that you can rent at most autoparts shops

I need to replace upper right ball joint, 98 honda civic

This is a pretty easy job.The way i do it is take the two 14mm bolts louse from the strut on the inner fender well, then take the 17mm bolt out of the bottom of the strut on the lower control arm this will make it drop down. Then take the 14mm bolt louse that fastens the ball joint to the spindle take a hammer and hit the upper spindle and it all will come apart. Now you will have the two bolts that holds the upper control arm in place these are 17mm bolts drop the strut down and remove the upper control arm now you can go in with the new one.Hope this helps !!!

Remove control arm. Replacement is recersal of the removal. Nissan/Infinity ball joints can not be pressed out or in. They are replaced with the whole new lower control arm as one (On most Nissan/ Infinity vehicles, although some exeptions apply. Hope this helps.
