Unless you're pretty mechanical adept, I wouldn't recommend that you try this. Too many things can go wrong if you aren't reasonable familiar with the mechanics of internal combustion engines.
If you still want to try this, then go to your local auto parts store and purchase a vehicle specific repair manual for your Kia. It'll outline exactly what you need to do.

well what i would do first is smell the transmission fluid if it smell burnt the transmission must come out,if not drop the valve body and check for a stuck valve or a check ball stuck in the separator plate try that over and out joe cool

I just purchaced a 2000 Sportage and am having the same problem. I did find that Autozone.com has a free online manual that you can view and print sections from. I would rather have a book at my side when I repair my car, but until somebody comes up with one we are stuck with the online services.
