My 1999 Chevy Blazer has 4-wheel drive problems. The problem begins when I start the blazer. Sometimes when it starts, the indicator lights on the shift buttons work fine and 4-wheel drive will shift without a problem. Lately, when I start the blazer one of two things will happen. 1.) the buttons for the 4-wheel drive do not light up or function at all. When this happens the "service 4-wheel drive" light appears. or 2.) the buttons light fine and the 4-wheel drive seems to work. Since it works sometimes and other times it does not, any suggestions? Also, when I restart the vehicle it sometimes will fix the problem. Thanks!

One more question for you if you don't mind. To check the connection, does the 4-wheel drive shift switch pop out easily from the dash? Didn't know if this was any easy check.

SOURCE: 1999 chevy blazer won't shift into 4wd

First try to disconnect the positive battery cable for 30 mins. This is the way to clear the TCM which is were the clicking is probably coming from. I hope this helps.

2000 blazer 4 wheel drive problem

It's most likely the "four wheel drive actuator" This is located on the front differential housing. It's cylindrical shaped and has a large hex (about
1-1/4") and two wires coming out of it. Usually they short out and blow the fuse but, I've also seen where they just quit working and sometimes they just get slow to work. The "actuator" has a heating element in it and it warms up, some sort gas, causing it to expand thus engaging the front wheels. In cold weather it may take a minute or so for it to engage, so put in four wheel drive and wait for a bit and see what happens.
