Question about 1997 Buick LeSabre

1997 buick lesabre steering locks up & can't turn left & whining

1997 Buick LeSabre steering wheel "locked up" when i was making a slow speed left hand turn. I literally could not turn the wheel and I'm a pretty strong guy.... It forced me off the road, all the while the steering wheel was trying to make a right turn, literally, by itself. The power steering pump was whining loudly until I put the car in park.

The belt is intact, plenty of power steering fluid, no odd leaks of any kind. I recently had the water pump and water pump bypass elbow replaced, which required removal of the alternator, tensioner pulley and arm, and I think the power steering pump. Replaced the 3rd ignition coil and put on new starter too.

What would cause this? Could the power steering pump pulley (which was VERY difficult to remove) be malfunctioning and cause the belt to just slip over it instead of turn it???

Thanks,
Chris

Very possible that the pump has failed (seized ) internally so get it checked out at an accredited power steering specialist shop
if it does not produce pressure then the steering will lock or be extremely heavy to turn

Steering wheel locked

Your steering wheel should turn to the left or right. It will probably just turn a little. That should be enough to allow the key to turn......

My 2000 Buick LeSabre makes a high pitched noise when accelerating that gets louder as speed increases, until it sounds like a Go-Kart. When I turn the wheel to the left during a curve, the sound goes...

Sounds like you need a wheel hub. Jack the car up then safely pull the tire with your hand on the top and bottom of it. If it moves at all you need a wheel hub, some will barely move at all.

The left turn signal will not cancel automatically

The left turn cancel return spring has broken. It is part of the turn signal switch. In order to replace you will need to get a steering wheel puller kit, a couple of picks and a snap ring pliers. This will allow you to remove the steering wheel, airbag clock spring, the steering wheel lock plate. and the horn ring. After those are removed you will have access to the turn signal switch. You will see the two springs in the switch. One will definetely no look the the other. The springs can be purchased individually from you local GM dealer. Might as well replace both as long as everything is taken apart.

sounds like a wheel bearing is going out. you need to get this checked out pretty soon because this can cause more severe problems down the road

How to take the dashboard out in a 1997 Buick Lesabre

the cover around the guage cluster pulls off might be screws going up towards winshield - but other pieces have 7mm screw holding covers in place - bottom pieces come off first - work up - wide screwdriver will help release covers that are snapped on - wood grain covers are just snapped on

1997 Buick LeSabre has squeak noise coming from right front.

More likely this is a wheel bearing or CV joint than suspension components.

One good indication is if, when your making a right turn or accelerating, there is a shudder or shaking in the steering wheel then its likely a wheel bearing.

Another good indicator can be found when you jack up the suspicious wheel. Put one hand on the top of the wheel and one on the bottom and pull back and forth. If the wheel makes a clunking noise and moves in either direction, then wheel bearing is shot.

1997 lesabre making strange squeaking noise when turning steering wheel

The only thing that will cause this noise is a worn out or dry running (caused by torn or damaged grease boot) Constand Velocity Joint or CV joint for short. this part is on the front dive axles just behind the wheel.

Steering wheel won't move, neither will the key in the ignition. 1998 Buick LeSabre. Please help.

Sounds like the anti-theft lock is stuck. Try having a friend turn the wheel to the left, hard, while you turn the ignition key. (Works if the front wheels are not locked up against a curb)

Turn Signal Flasher

What do you mean? Its the same as most cars. The left hand bar on the steering wheel. If u mean the signal lights on your dash, there should be one left of your speedometer for left signal and one on right of it for right signal unless yours aren't working for some reason.

Power steering

Support front wheels off ground. Chock rear tires, get an assistant for safty. Start engine (do not put in gear) step outside of car and manually turn wheels left and right by hand. Cut off engine. Turn key back to release steering lock. Manually turn wheels by hand again. If it requires the same ammount of strength to turn wheels, then Rack and Pinion is bypassing internally. Solution... replace rack & pinion.
