My 1999 GV has the same problem. From my initial research, it seems that a common problem is a faulty air pump or a leak in the air line or actuator that engages the 4wd. This vehicle uses a pressure line instead of a vacuum line to engage the 4wd. I just got my GV back from my mechanic about 30 minutes ago and it seems like my air pump is dying (mounted inside the front bumper). Now I just have to find a replacement. ( I live about 90 miles from the nearest dealer.)
