87 celica. tail lights do not work, but brake and others do

WOW ,start by looking what muffler got cought up in ,start testing for power from steering column bottom ,and yes it could be the hand set on steering wheel.

Yes, it could be switch, check it out, the exhaust is a different story

The turn signals and brake lights use the same circuit and filament in the bulbs. The tail lights are on the other circuit which comes from the headlight switch.
Do you have power on the tail light fuse ?

The 15A stoplight fuse might be bad on your car if your brake and tail lights aren't working.

Did you check socket for power & ground?

Do you have the correct bulb

Turn signal tail lights and BRAKE LIGHTS NOT WORKING

It can be faulty brake light switch causing the problem or its blown brake light bulb. First check and confirm brake light lamp is working and that's not the case.

If the center brake light works but not the others, and the bulbs are good, the problem is usually the turn signal switch.

That has a double filament bulb in it. One is for the tail light and the other for the brake and maybe the turn signal. If your turn signal flashes the tail light and not an individual turn signal bulb it will behave the same way. The way it works is that the tail light filament goes off and the brighter brake light filament comes on. The brake light half of the bulb is out. If you change it, change the passenger side too, it will do the same shortly if you leave it in. They tend to go bad in pairs. Good luck.

There is a can flasher under the dash and another behind the dash cluster.

Had the same thing happen to me changed both and now turn signals work great. I have a '87 camaro.

Check and replace the turn signal flasher unit.
