Hi, in your cutlass if you have Air conditioner you can turn it on and the fan should start in a minute maximum, if it starts when turning on the AC means that the fan relay and the motor are OK.
Another test is force the computer to send the signal that turn on the fan making a bridge with a clip between the terminals AB where the scanner can be connected. The scanner connection is down the dashboard at drivers side. It has 12 available connections as shown below:
FEDCBA
GHJKLM
With the switch off put a clip connecting terminals A and B and then put the switch at the position where the lamp tests are on just before cranking (do not crank), at this moment the fan should start if the relay and the motor are OK (computer is sending the signal).
If the fan starts with any of the tests described above means that your temperature control sensor is not working.

Replace the Temperature control sensor. Located at the engine near the thermostat housing. you can trace the wiring back from the fan to the sensor. If the fan still does not start. Try spining it by hand with the switch off. If you hear any noise at all.it may be the fan clutch. While you're at it check that wires to the fan aren't boken or pinched .

When the car is completely cool,check the electric fan(s) for smooth rotation.

Clean/check/change the thermo sensor,contact and wire.

===

Excavate air pocket in coolant system / check for head gasket leak

This test will kill two birds with one stone.

===

MAKE SURE THE COOLANT SYSTEM and ENGINE IS COLD!

RAN THIS TEST IN A WELL VENTILATED AREA ONLY!

You will spill some coolant during this air pocket purge test.......BE KIND TO THE ENVIRONMENT and ANIMAL please clean up after the test!

===

Put the front end on a pair of ramp or park your car on a VERY STEEP HILL (radiator facing top of the hill) .

Top of the coolant reserve tank

Let it ran for 10-15 minutes.

Monitor for air pockets escaping from coolant reserve tank.

Small amount of bubbles is OK at 1-5 minute mark

After the thermostat open up (after 195 F warm up) at
5-12 minute mark or after high idle you should see less bubbles.

If you do not see any in rush of bubbles then your thermostat may be partially stuck or rusted badly inside the thermostat hosing.

Give the thermostat host few gentle taps.

If you see larger bubbles surfacing after 15 minutes then should do a hydrocarbon (HC) dye test to test for potential head gasket leak.

Let engine cold down and top off coolant reserve tank.

Start monitor for coolant lost

===

A coolant flush is require every 2 years or 24,000 miles.

I recommend the thermostat that has a relief pop-let to reduce the change of burst radiator and coolant hoses.

Make sure you get a new thermostat gasket,black RTV and fresh coolant for the job.

Could car be running hot because of fan not working or radiator or both?

If an engine runs hot due to a partially blocked radiator the electric fan would be running most of the time.

If the fan doesn't run at all it suggests it isn't working and while that alone is likely to cause overheating in many driving scenarios, it is worth noting a car with a well designed cooling system in good order should rarely need the benefit of an electric fan when cruising at light load mid speeds.

It is possible the car has reached an age where it would be worth giving the cooling system a birthday along with repairing the cooling fan - replacing the thermostat and flushing the system thoroughly, including ensuring the radiator core is clear and nothing inhibits the air flow...

My 2004 3400 closed system ,runs hot in town unless heater is on. driving up a mountain pass it gets very hot.on a flat highway runs normal. new t state,resivior cap, both fans work no leaks or smell

Radiator fan motor or radiator fan thermostat defective/

Also there is a relay that operates the fan motor

In town not enough air passing through radiator allowing it to over temp.. With heater fan running acts like cooling fan keeping engine cool

Highway driving ample air passing through radiator without fan.

Hill climbing requires cooling fan/

Hope this helps?

91 Pontiac grand prix LE. radiator fan will not come on, if hot wire it works.

If memory serves me right, There is a resistor at the top of the fan/s in the center. Things that keep them off. ECM, Relay/s, Fuses, and Resistors.

Whats causing car to keep running hot?

Change your thermostat then it will run at the right temp. Unless you have a cracked head or a blown head gasket

Cooling fan runs intermittently and causes the engine to run hot

The cooling fan isn't causing the engine to run hot, it's electrical and cannot heat an engine. It is turning on in response to your engine running hot. Check coolant level and age, if it's still running hot then check the thermostat - it could be stuck closed. If the thermostat is fine and coolant level is full, it could be partially clogged radiator or head gasket problem (a sure sign of bad head gasket is that your coolant keeps disappearing with no leaks).

Car running hot when idle

The most common reason for running hot at idle is the radiator fan is not running or pulling enough air thru the radiator. If you have a fan for the engine and one for the ac, the engine fan may not be working.
The radiator fan should come on when the coolant reaches 220 degrees. The computer sends a signal to the fan relay.

Temperature hand keeps moving up

when the engine is completely cool. first thing you need to do is check your coolant level. if it is full. then either your thermostat is bad, your cooling fans aren't working, radiator is plugged or heater core is plugged. but if the heat works and blows good and hot odds are nothing is plugged and its the cooling fans that aren't working. Worst case could be a bad head gasket

My radiator keeps running hot and it doesn't appear that either fan is running with the engine on. I've had the radiator flushed and refilled and have no evidence of glycol leaking under the car while...

When radiator is hot feel the inlet and outlet hoses. If the radiator outlet hose(top hose) is hot and the radiator inlet hose(lower) is cold, its your thermostat. If its not that and both hoses are hot, you may need to check your water pump. Hope this helps.
