More like computer.. you will need to isolate the problem with one code at a time... sometime two codes are fixed, try this: 1. Check the rotor and break pad thickness, that normally will fix abs, brake or abs and tracs. 2. check engine could be as simple as an O2 sensor or fuel filter, coil pack, starter... each needs to be check'd. 3. check engine should identify condition codes.. go to princess auto and pick up the comptuer untit for 60$. 4. If it ain't burning oil.. heck have fun with it. Have fun..
It's your abs control module. Remove your abs control module and send it out to be rebuilt. It should cost you less than $100. Check out the offerings on Ebay.
There are actually two gears that you need to replace, a large one and then smaller one that rides inside it. You can purchase them both at www.fcpgroton.com These can also sometimes affect the operation of your speedometer. Do you by chance have an ABS and TRACS light on? If so the speedometer issue may be related to your ABS controller.
Two questions: Is your odometer working? If not then it's probably a broken gear by the stepper motor that Emissionwiz mentioned. Is your ABS and/or TRACS light on intermittently or constantly. If so that is a common sign your ABS control module has gone or is going bad. This usually happens before the speedometer starts acting up. Either one of these will start intermittently and finally end up with the speedometer not functioning at all, and both are pretty common failures with this model.
Sounds like a bad ABS control module is at least part of your problem. The symptoms are usually and ABS and TRACS light intermittent or constand and eventually your speedometer works intermittently or totally quits. This guy rebuilds/upgrades them for about $140. New ones run over $800. http://home.earthlink.net/~vicrocha/Volvo_Parts/Volvo_ABS_removal.htm
I will bet money that it is the ABS/TRACS module. It is mounted under the master cylinder on the bottom of the ABS unit. These are very, very, very common failures. I have replaced hundreds of them in my career. To answer your other question, the TRACS system uses brakes. For example: in the snow, when the L or R wheel is spinning faster than the opposite, the TRACS will apply brake to the spinning wheel to slow it down to an equal speed. Hope this helps.
THE SWITCH SHOULD BE THE SAME FOR 93-97 AND THE REOSTAT DIMER SWITCH CIRCUIT SHOULD BE CHECKED AND AS FAR AS SPEEDOMETER IS CONCERNED IT MUST BE REPLACED FROM A 94OR 95 AND 96 AND 97 ARE DIFFERENT CLUSTERS
