It would be easier if u could shove a screw driver in and try to push the latch open, but if u need to breaking the handle works.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ elm 327 bluetooth
If the glove box was closed wrong than the latch that keeps the glove box shut will close on itself. If you take a pen or a screwdriver and put little pressure on it and try the handle again it should open. if thats not the case than replace the handle, the locking mechanism with in the handle or the spring broke or came apart.
Look up inside the right or left side of the dash where the glove box closes. There should be a screw that holds stop your talking about. Re attatch it. Unscrew the screw. If broke then use a small nylon strap n secure it to that screw n to the place on the inside of the glove box door.
I have an 03 Aztek and my latch just broke the trick to getting it open is a screwdriver or a little hook of some sort... Pull the handle back and look up under u will see a metal bar on the right side. get a grip of that and pull/pry a little bit and it will open. Once open there are 2 philips head screws holding it in and that's it
If it is unlocked, the the pin attached to the handle could be broken. There is a small "U" shaped metal piece that is part of the mechanism inside the handle. You have to first pull up the handle as if to open it and slide your finger in towards the top then once you feel it push it down, your finger is replacing the broken pin. This should open it. Hope this helps.
This happened in my '01 galant as well. If you take a peek under where the handle used to be, there's a little square nook with a spring and a little plastic tab. take a key and stick it right above the tab and press down, and the glove compartment should just pop right open. If it doesn't work, then it's probably just locked. Just unlock the door and try it again.
If the glove box is anything like mine it is a modular piece assembled with screws.... let them break the handle.. get a replacement first from a junk dealer and have the broken part swapped out. Its like a seat belt catch in my 97 deville. The glove box in mine flopped open and the catch had broken and fell down the door of the glovebox itself. The whole door is assembled with philips screws and should be easily removed and a new latch put in.. whoever does it should not cost more than 50.00 in labor MAYBE unless you have a friend that would do it for a beer. I saw a complete glove box on ebay for 40.00 shipping ontop of that .. i saw the latch for 20.00 +shipping.
