Hello. Your problem is in the area called Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI). The shifter assembly in the console has a switch-solenoid (shift interlock) that has to send a release signal to the key release solenoid in the steering column. Replacement of the shifter assembly or shift interlock solenoid normally resolves the problem. regards, Joe

no nice way to do this, but a pair of vise grips to get a good grip on the key and a SMALL hammer ,pull out on vice grips and tap vice grips with hammer at the same time

Just a thought , if the gear stick is not in park the key cannot be removed from the ignition I found out when I left the car in nuetral .
