Timing degrees BTDC for a 2.2L auto,1990 ply `dance,canadian-6* or 12*,my emmisions tag is missing,HELP!!

Steve, its 10 deg BTDC

set it at 12 degrees btdc where it should be
If it has electronic timing it will advance /retard from that point and not as you expect to go to the correct setting

use a timing light to check the degrees btdc
Should be 10-12 degrees btdc
could be injector click or hydraulic cam followers noise although I thing that would be audible on the coast action as well
check fuel pump as they click when working

For a 1990 Volvo 2.3 SOHC B230 at 700-800 rpm 12 degrees
at 2500 rpm 21 degrees plus or minus 1 degree

For a 1990 Volvo 2.3 DOHC 15 dergrees BTDC

For a 1990 Volvo SOHC turbo same as SOHC specs

it should be 10 degrees BTDC, the big notch is 10 BTDC, the plug gap is .o44, 4.9 engine 1-5-3-6-2-4--distributer rotation: clockwise, what i do is take out #1 plug, use a straw or similar object and put it very carefully in #1 plug hole on top of piston when 1 is all the way up. rotor should be at #1 on distributor.. have a person turn crank on damper pully in front of engine, until the rotor is pointing to # 1 in distributor, from there you can set the base timing. have a good day !!

Contact Canadian Tire Automotive repair shops. They have that on hand, or you can buy the Haynes paper back manual for about 30 dollars. When in doubt, I always set my timing at 8 degrees BTDC, and that will usually work for most vehicles, it is kind of the happy medium, because it isnot too far off from that if it is off anything.

10 degrees BTDC

1968 Barracuda with a 318cid; The 5th digit of the vin will be (F) for the engine-318 2v rated @ 230hp.

Compression pressure--125-155 max variation 25
Spark plugs--Champion N-14Y @ .035" gap-torqued @ 30ft. lb.
Timing--man. trans @ 5 degrees btdc, auto trans @ 10 degrees btdc.
Points-- .014"-.019" gap--Dwell--28-33 degrees, max variation is 2 @ 1500 rpm--Spring tension--17-20 ounces.
Fuel pump pressure 5-7 lbs. manual pump
Hydraulic Lifters--no valve clearances
Firing order--1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 counterclock wise rotation
Idle speed--Turn headlights on highbeams and turn a/c off
500rpm for man trans--500rpm auto trans in neutral.

Left bank of the engine (driver's side), 1-3-5-7 Right bank (passenger side), 2-4-6-8

5 degrees BTDC

I time these engines at 4 to 6 degrees BTDC. If there is timing chain wear or if it has higher mileage, I go to 8 BTDC. The extra degrees help with the timing chain stretch.
