Car won't start after disconnecting battery to replace alternator

In order to replace the alternator on my 1995 Avalon, I disconnected the battery. After replacing the alternator, and reconnecting the battery cables, the car won't turn overt. I checked the fuses and they seem to be alright. The starter does not engage. It acts like there is a relay switch that needs to be reset. Thoughts?

Are you sure you have the battery connected right, Red to + Black to -? The connections are tight? Are sure the new batery is good? I've seen that happen before where the battery is new but dead. Try jumping it from another car or put that battery in another car and see if it starts that car. If you have a voltmeter check the battery, it should be about 12.8 volts, then check while trying to start the car the voltage shoudn't drop below 10 volts.

At a guess I would start with the immobiliser. It may need to be re-set due to the battery being disconnected.

Battery light

Its probably the alternator.
The warning light comes on anytime alternator output drops below 12 volts.
I should also tell you, you can't check an alternator by running the engine with the battery disconnected. The alternator needs the battery in series for the diodes to work. What you did could have damaged the alternator and also the engine computer. Only generators can be checked by disconnecting the battery.

It sounds like you have a bad actuator. This is attached to the starter and has a solonoid that pushes the starter motor gears into the engine gear. If the solonoid is faulty this may happen. Also check alignment of the same.

Disconnect the battery before starting the job! Your power cable from the alternator will be disconnected and could potentially ground out if your battery is not disconnected!
