-Disconnect the negative battery cable.

-Drain the cooling system.

-Remove the distributor cap and rotor. Remove the rotor adapter, the dust shield and the distributor housing.

-Remove the fan. The fan must be held stationary with tool 11 5 030 or some sort of flat blade cut to fit over the hub and drilled to fit over 2 of the studs on the front of the pulley. Remove the fan coupling nut; left hand thread-turn clockwise to remove.

-Remove the belt and pulley.

-Remove the rubber guard and distributor and or upper timing belt cover.

-Compress the timing tensioner spring and clamp pin with the proper tool.

*Observe the installed position of the tensioner spring pin on the water pump housing for reinstallation purposes.*

-Remove the water hoses, remove the 3 water pump bolts and remove the pump.

ON THE BACK OF THE HEAD THERE IS A PLASTC PIPE WITH TWO HOSES COMING OFF IT THESE TEND TO CRACK AND LEAK WITH AGE SO IF THE LEAK IS FROM THE BACK OF THE ENGINE THEN THIS IS MORE THAN LIKELY THE PROBLEM THEY ARE ONLY£4 NEW FROM GSF I HAD TO REPLACE MINE THE PTHER DAY.

Removing fan to replace water pump on 1994 318is bmw

Not sure if it is the same, but I have a 1996 328i and the fan is attached to the front of the water pump via a large nut. That nut is a 32 mm (1 and 1/4 inch fits it as well), and is BACKWARDS threaded (i.e right to loosen and left to tighten). You may need to use a pair of vise grips and lock onto the belt to keep the entire front of the motor from turning. I have also heard giving it a few good whacks from a rubber mallet tends to get them to break free. If you do have to use the Visa grips on the belt be careful to not break your water pump pulley. Although it looks to be made of metal it is actually made of plastic and will break if it gets caught up in the tension of turning that fan nut. When the motor is running it is turning in the tightening direction, so I put some anti-sieze on the threads before re-installing. Hope that helps.
