FIAT PUNTO 1.2 8v 2001. After a day of not running my car, when I start up for the first 5mins the engine makes a ticking noise, which gets louder when revved, it seems like it may be to do with something rotating.
Definitely change your oil every 3 months or 3000 miles. After you change it add a half cup of Lucas engine oil suppliment when the engine is hot.
If if goes away you know it's cam or lifter issue. If it doesn't the ticking you hear may simply be your fuel system.
The ticking you hear sounds like it is the camshaft check the oil leval i would advice you get it changed too dont leave this if the camshaft goes it will ruin the engine
yes thats exactly what i think it is but its the damage that its doing in the mean time check the oil leval and be sure to change at least once a year i prefer every 6 months you carnt change your oil to many times its that important
i would personaly start it and drive straight off but you might be best asking the garge to give it a quick once over saying your going on a long journy but its proberly because the car has been standing so all the oil is at the bottom of the engine if it goes off in a few minutes as the engine warms up its proberly nothing to worry about oil additive will help go to halfords and ask what they have for this purpose

Thanks for the reply. Could it be that after a day or 2 not running the engine (in the current cold weather), they may not have oil lubricating at start up, and after a bit it goes away, so could it be that they lubricate eventually.
Checked the oil, level is fine. The oil was changed in October09 as part of its annual service. It might be a garage job :-( to get it checked. I need to drive 300 miles next week. Do you reckon it is best to start the car, let it idle until it stops ticking, then go driving?
