If it is the EFi model (electronic fuel injection) then change the coolant temp sensor

If it is the slightly earlier Bosch K-Jetronic mechanical injection it could be either the warm up valve or the 5th injector (Blue coloured part on the end of the fuel rail)

Bosch CIS-E system.
  • Your thermo-time switch could be bad
  • An aux air regulator not opening or stuck in between
  • Cold start valve not injecting extra fuel in the intake track
  • Fuel regulator not operating sufficiently
  • Fuel distributor faulty
  • Metering valve faulty

I have a 1988 mk 2 golf when i start the engine the heater warms up as normal but when the engine warms up the heater starts blowing cold air out. also now that the cold weather has started after driving...

sounds like the thermostat stickng as when engine gets cold the choke will start workin again, causing the over reving or your electric fan is on all the time "over cooling" the engine

'96 VW Golf GL with 2.0 motor. Cold start knock

It sounds like the hydraulic lifters are bleeding down after sitting for a while... there are ball checks which are supposed to prevent this... Try using a good engine flush (a product that frees sticky lifters) and replace the oil with a good synthetic... Hope this helps...;-)
