Difficulty in cold starting golf MKII 1988 - 1988 Volkswagen Golf

No vehicle will start with ease at -40°F !

Heater core might be half plugged that or need new thermostat ....

Hi there, changing the starter motor would not have affected/caused this.

Bosch CIS-E system.

• Your thermo-time switch could be bad
• An aux air regulator not opening or stuck in between
• Cold start valve not injecting extra fuel in the intake track
• Fuel regulator not operating sufficiently
• Fuel distributor faulty
• Metering valve faulty
  

sounds like the thermostat stickng as when engine gets cold the choke will start workin again, causing the over reving or your electric fan is on all the time "over cooling" the engine

injectors may be bleeding down causing a loss of fuel pressure making it hard to start,or fuel pressure regulator,sounds like some kind of lack of fuel pressure

check the glow plugs -- are they all working.

It sounds like the hydraulic lifters are bleeding down after sitting for a while... there are ball checks which are supposed to prevent this... Try using a good engine flush (a product that frees sticky lifters) and replace the oil with a good synthetic... Hope this helps...;-)
