Timing belt is broken on my 2004 Dodge Stratus w/DOHC engine. Mechanic says the intake valves were ost likely broken too which ups the estimate by $700. He says this is the case 99.9% of the time. Is this really the case or is he just trying to take advantage of me?
The dohc engine is not an interference engine but if the cams are misaligned the valves interfere with each other. Yes it is expensive
It can happen, I'm not sure if you car is one of these. But when a timing belt breaks you take a gamble that your car is not one of these.
That is why the timing belt should be replaced every 60,000 miles!
Sorry!
You have to find out if your stratus has an interference fit engine, which means if the cam and the crankshaft become disconnected, the pistons will hit the valves and bend them causing them to not seat. Most of the time engines are interference fit.
