I am assuming you have the 4.3L V6 and it's 4wd. I use to have the same problem with a 96 S10. Typically when climbing hills it harder for the oil get pumped to the top of the motor, which can cause overheating. One little trick you can do is swap out the thermostat with one of a lower temp. Basically the thermostat is what controls coolant into the motor, On your Jimmy it opens at 190degree's, so no coolant flows through the motor until it hit's 190. You can replace the thermostat with one that opens at 160 or 165, this will allow more cooling time for the motor. I also had a 89 Jimmy that had this problem, infact my Jimmy overheated on the highway on hot days, I had put in a lower temp thermostat and problem solved on both these trucks.
Well if the thermostat was stuck closed, the engine and the heater would get hot but the coolant would not flow thru the radiator. If the cooling system is full of fluid, and the engine is running hot, and the heater hoses are cold, I would say the water pump has failed or you have another kind of restriction.
Check that the fan is turning in the right direction, in all the changes it is possible that you may have crossed the fan wires and not the fan is blowing forwards instead of backwards. Also check that there are no air locks in the system and that there is a positive flow of coolant.
overheating can be caused by stuck shut t-stat but u would have heat at-stat stuck open no overheating and no heat. a waterpump that the impeller broke or rotted of can cause your problem but rarly seen does your fan work or any leakage or low coolant can cause air pocket and overheating no heat. let me know and we go foward
I had problems with a similar truck,a 1998 GMC diesel after checking to make sure the control cables were operating the blend door and blowing the mess of the heater core,I replace the thermostats.Still no heat turns out there was a small amount of debris collecting in the fitting for the inlet hose at the thermostat housing after removing it and blowing out the lines the heat was fine.
