Try the water pump - first - make sure the radiator is really full - take the cap off cold and fill - if it looks full - start and run 8 minutes or so - then fill it up - look at ur fan belt - is it tight - tight is about how much pressure u use to make a firm hand shake with little movement - any movement over about an inch is loose - when the jeep warms up the belt can slip and not even make a noise - - new materials don't always squeal. - then be sure ur water pump is ok - they go slowing - the fins wear down - one more thing is the radiator - u don't say how many miles or what maintenance schedules you have or not so that's it for now

Overheated. Why won't it start?

I'm not really familiar with JEEP mechanics but if you've replaced your water pump and it's still overheating with full water/coolant level, you should check the thermostat; when it fails, it's a common cause or overheating in all kind of cars

I'm attaching some links to Youtube tutorial about replacing thermostat in a Jeep but you can expand your Google search using terms

My 2004 Jeep grand cherokee loredo is overheating while at idle?

it sounds like the problem is with your fan not running. I would try and see if you have power at the fan and test the fan to see if it isn't bad.

Ran a 300 mile trip up to Pennsylvania mountains this weekend. 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee ran fine. I did notice though that while driving with ac on I got a blast of hot air. Temp gauge was at 200 to 210 no...

Doesn't sound as though you have overheating issues.
With a 196 thermostat, a vehicle is designed to run at 200 to 210,and you were putting it under a load on your trip.
I don't know why you would think about changing anything, unless you were doing some trouble shooting, and a test you were performing, indicated a failed component.
I would change the thermostat, as preventative maintainance every five years, and watch for the fans to be working after a trip of five miles or so.
Your A/C may have been switched off, by the various computer systems, to prevent overheating, or it may be starting to have it's own issues.

How do you replace the fan motor in '03 jeep grand cherokee laredo? - the damn thing overheats when idle - changed the relay & coolant sensor... still overheating

When was the last coolant change?
Under 2 years or 24,000 miles.

Change the thermostat and gasket first.

Use a 195F with pop-let protection.

A stuck/failing thermostat is a common cause of over-heating problem.

======
To change the fan,the entire protector plastic has to come out.

Most likely you will break the push in locking pins.

Get few replacement push in locking pins before you start the job.
