White smoke and the smell of burning rubber. I have had lots maintenance of work done to my car. I was starting to notice and smell burn oil. I had a small valve cover leak so I just had the whole valve cover gasket replaced and I had a "Roll Stop" replaced. Now I'm starting to get a lot of white smoke after the car run for about 5 minutes coming from the back side of the motor back but I can't tell where it's coming from on the back side of the engine.

I do Have a check engine light on that's been on all year. I used to have error code Po421 I had my two of my sections of my Cats replaced and now I have error code PO 141. I have had my O2 sensor replaced. But have not been able to get rid of my PO 141 code. I have another O2 sensor replacement on the way. I don't know if this has anything to do with my current situation.

Maybe when I had my motor mount "Roll Stop" replaced something wasn't tighten properly. I have a flashlight I will check again for the source of the smoke and let you know. Smoke first seem to come from the driver side underneath the hood while driving. When I open the hood yesterday the smoke seem to be coming from the back side of the motor.

I will check for the smoke source again...and check my oil level first before I start the car and let you know.

I took the car back to GoodYear Tires. They said the white smoke behind the engine was an result of the valve cover not sealing properly. They said something will dripping on the intake or something. They will reseal my valve cover and replace the gaskets for free.

Bradley,
You have stated two problems. Coming to second first. Smell of burning rubber. in the car rubber is only at two places where it can burn, The tyres, unlikely as you have not commented upon your driving habits. Some people like to rev the engine so much before take off that the tyres go burning for the first few hundred meters. And then there is rubber on the wires and cables. You have to check the wires for any heat while the engine is running.
Coming to the first now. White smoke is generally of unburnt fiel and not oil. Oil alwayd give black smoke and that is the indication you get when the exhaust is giving black smoke. That means that the engine is consuming oil. if it is white then that indicates that the engine is cold and burning more gas/diesel. Is your a diesel vehicle?? But as you say it from under the hood. And that too behind the engine block. May be that the gasket is leaking from somewhere. If you could check the engine oil level for a few days early in the morning before starting the engine. If the level drops and the exhaust tail pipe does not blacken your finger when you rub it in it would mean that the oil is being burnt. Now what I suggest is that with the engine running and hand brakes on, go under the car with hood open and try to locate the source of the smoke. I am sure you would be able to locate it.
Then we talk again.

    Bradley,

Thanks for listening tome. The checking of engine oil in the morning is not a one day affair. It should be checked for a few days as the level to come down noticeably will take a few days as the leak is not a major one. In the mean time, have Happy Holidays.

So, one of your problems turned out to be what we discussed the other day and has been taken care of. Now, have you been able to locate the burning wires ot rubber? Or was it the burning oil only? Has the smell stopped after they repaired the gasket?

What do you think about my suzuki multicab with lots of white smoke and sometimes the smell a burning of clutch?

White smoke usually means burning coolant in combustion chamber and lots of it is not good. Check for oil in radiator coolant reservoir. If oil is present your engine is bad.

My 2008 H3 hummer seems to being oil. My service temp light comes on and temperature gage starts to rise. It also is giving off smell like burning rubber and at times smells like rotten eggs. What wou

Rotten egg smell is your cateladic converter... part of your exhaust pipe... should go away in a month.... the smoke coming from your oil is natural... as the oil heats up it can smoke a little... kind of a wisp... anymore then that you should get it checked.... park the rig on a large white sheet and check in a day for oil spots, if you see some isolate the area, a lot of times it can come from a loose oil filter, or oil plug but some times it comes from a worn seal. also check that the pvc valve isn't worn.... then if they are all ok I would be thinking the engine is burning it...ps. it is important to use the right weight of oil for the temperature... too thin burns off, too thick over works the oil pump and rings on the piston. stay away from the cleaners unless you are changing the oil, I use a product called sea foam personally. Good luck

Smoking from under hood

A leak of some fluid, probably oil, dripping onto the exhaust. This smells terrible, and it only needs a drop or two.

Mitsibushi pajero oil light time

White SWEET smelling smoke, or white OILY smelling smoke? If it's white thick SWEET smelling smoke, you have a blown head gasket - that's the smell of antifreeze burning in the engine, which it should NEVER do. If it's white OILY smelling smoke (smells a lot like diesel), then you're getting too much fuel into the cylinders.

If it's sweet-smelling smoke (antifreeze), pull the oil dipstick & check the oil level. If the oil level is HIGH and the oil looks like a mocha milkshake, that's absolutely conclusive - that's what happens when antifreeze gets into your oil, and it's nasty corrosive to engine parts.

I'm not at all surprised that the oil light is on if it won't start - you won't get much oil pressure until the engine is running.

2001 ford windstar .Dorman 615-177 kit was installed .It has 350 miles on it since the install but on startup it's blowing white smoke.doesn't stumble ,idles fine and drives fine.Smoke is just brief on...

Valve seal leaks will cause an engine to smoke on start until the oil burns off. If a head gasket were leaking it would be smoking constantly.

Engine oil

It is not unusual for an older truck to be burning a little oil. It is burning very little so you will not smell burnt oil or see blue smoke in the exhaust. But the oil burn does add up and you may notice a drop on the oil dipstick after a few weeks. On a 9 year old truck under normal working conditions will burn a little oil. If you are having to add 1 liter between oil changes, that is ok, just shows normal engine ware. 2 Liters is acceptable between oil changes if the truck does a lot of heavy pulling or work. 3 or more liters indecates a problem, but at that rate, you should be able to smell oil and see blue smoke.
