Sounds like park safety switch, there are 2 switches 1 neutral and 1 park, if it starts in neutral,it is working,if in park, and does not start usually means bad switch or wire off.

Where is the neutral safety switch located?

The neutral safety switch in a 2008 Dodge Nitro is typically located on the transmission case, near the gear selector linkage. If your vehicle is experiencing starting issues in park and now the park won't engage, it's possible that the neutral safety switch might be malfunctioning. I recommend having a professional mechanic diagnose and repair the issue to ensure it's properly addressed.

What is a neutral safety switch?

The Neutral Safety switch monitors the position of your gear selector lever and either interrupts or allows the starting circuit in your car or truck to do its job. On newer vehicles it may also monitor the position of the brake pedal to make sure that the vehicle is in park or neutral AND that your foot is on the brake.

If your vehicle is equipped with a neutral safety switch, it should NOT start UNLESS the transmission is in Neutral or Park. On the other hand your vehicle SHOULD start when it is in Neutral or Park. If your car will start in Neutral but not in Park, you have a bad switch. Also, if your car or truck will only start by turning the key to the start position and wiggling the gear selector lever, your neutral safty switch is in need of replacement.

The nuetral safety switch is usually found near the gear shifter. If your car has the gear shift on the column, then the neutral safety switch is usully mounted on the steering column near the brake pedal. On floor mount or console mount vehicles you will find the nuetral safety switch mounted near or on the shifter mechanism.

Car only starts in reverse and only drives in neutral

Sounds like a cable to the transmission is not adjusted up right, and/or the neutral safety switch is not adjusted right, if this applies to your Toyota Corolla.

My 2001 porsche boxter S 3.2 will not start in park, but will start normally in neutral, does anyone know why? (it's an automatic)

1.Shifter linkage could be out of adjustment, and not allowing the Neutral safety switch to be bypassed, when in the Park position.

The shift linkage, could move the arm of the neutral safety switch far enough, to bypass it when the shifter is in Neutral, but not far enough when the shifter is in Park.

2.Perhaps the Neutral safety switch is bad, or has come loose on it's mount, and is out of position.

2001 toyota 4 runner/ starter will not disengage after starting

He's right I would check Neutral safety switch first. Make sure B+ only comes out of one end of it when pedal is released. Only time B+ must be out of both sides of this is when pedal is depressed. Ignition switch can't go to starter directly B+ starts at ign switch to neutral safety to solenoid on starter.
Most neutral safety switches can be adjusted.
