On my 99 Passat petrol car a yellow warning light has come on which looks like a sideways view of a gearbox or engine block? I can't find the meaning of this, or what I should do about it, any ideas please? regards Chris

What vehicle is it, is it a diesel or a petrol engine? What does the yellow light look like? They often show as a little symbol.
Yellow lights are usually 'caution' warnings. This means the vehicle's electronics has found something it doesn't like and flags it up as a warning light.

First of all you need to access the Engine Control Module (ECM) using suitable diagnostic equipment connected to the data link connector of the car, in order to pull out all DTC's memored. DTC = Diagnostic Trouble Code. Then you will bu full informed about the root cause of the problem, and you will be able to repair & replace bad pieces and reset the ECM. Then both EPC (Electronic Pedal Control) & engine warning yellow light will turn OFF.

Based on passat or vw cars that means you've asr( anti slip) button turn on. Kind of usefull. Turn off by switching it off. It may be know by other names but same thing.

There may be no check engine light but that doesn't mean there isn't a code in the ECU. Especially with a misfire. I'd have the codes scanned and see what you got. The cannister issue isn't going to give you a misfire it will give you stalling and rough idle.
Lets see what ECU is saying. You can go to Autozone if you don't have a scanner they will scan it for free. If scanning turns out negative than have a cylinder leakage test done. This way we can determine which cylinder has the problem and what the problem is.

Depending on which light is flashing will determine whats wrong, normally thee are three lights that flash one is yellow check engine light, when it flashes it means a misfire and catastrophic catalytic converter failure. Red oil light means your low on oil and if it does not have a gage you may have damaged the engine and then there is several others like air bag warning light this would be caused by a defective clock spring, or a malfunction in the computer system. Your best bet is call your local dealer and describe to them your problem and tell them what lights are flashing they can determine weather you should drive it or have it towed in for repairs. Remember FLASHING RED OR Yellow light means imminent failure of expensive engine parts.
