Car wont start. Turn the key and only get mileage lights to come on and a clicking noise from under the glove box area. have a 5 speed.

it sounds like your starter relay is working (thats the clicking you hear) so the problem possibly lies withe starter motor or the solenoid mounted on top of it.

Central locking in my bmw 320 diesel isnt working it wont open the doors but it will start the engine , the spare key is the same so its not the battery of the keys

Providing central locking works when you insert key in lock, try programming keys
Enter car make sure all doors/windows are shut
Switch ignition on and off, remove key
PRESS AND HOLD UNLOCK BUTTON ON KEY
Press lock button on key 3 times whithin 10 seconds and release unlock
Central locking will lock/unlock rapidly to confirm reset
If your key is the type with bmw logo in the middle battery replacement is not possible,as it charges as you drive

Bmw 740 il key broke in half at remote part car

Yes it is, but just having the key near the ignition is enough to start the car. If you can turn the ignition with the broken key, hold the broken part in your hand and see if it will start. Hopefully the chip isn't damaged. I know that when GM keys are replaced, they glue the old key under the dash to make it work. Hope this helps.

I bought a lovely old 1995 BMW soft top but it only came with one key. I got another one cut locally and it opens the doors but when i put it in the ignition it does not start the car

will it turn the ignition? if not the key is cut wrong. If it turns the ignition and the engine will not crank you probably have some type of anti theft system that requires a special key to make it work.

My 1995 bmw 5 series wont start! it acknowledges the key in the ignition, but when your turn the key nothing happens. it makes no attempt to start engine whatsoever.

Had the same problem, My issue had to do with the door locks? I guess the door locks are tied into the ignition for security purpose. I had to get out and close the door put the key in the drivers door, lock it and than unlock it (make sure all the door lock knobs go down and up) than it started right up.
Strange I know but it has to do with some type of security issue?

BMW 318i wont start engine

I would have the battery tested. When they get cold they get weak. Next I would look at the wires on the starter to see if their loose.

1985 BMW 325e will not start

rcaf arrow: The clicking sound id probably your starter solenoid. Tis solenoid is actually a relay that connects your starter to the battery so the starter can turn the engine over to get it started.
Try knocking the starter with a hammer, (not real hard, just kinda medium) and see if that makes a difference  I suspect your starter is going bad.
Any indication of prior problems with starting?????

BMW

Turn the key in the ignition to the point where all the lights come on (dont start the car) leave the key in this postion for approx 2 mins then turn it off and on again. This makes the ECU do a self diagnostic (you'll hear a double click in the engine bay when its done) this will solve most minor problems if this doesn't work you can buy a diagnostic interface for cheap which will describe the problem fully i.e. sensor malfunction.
