2005 Nissan Xterra (2wd) check engine light flashes then engine stalls at stop lights, driving fast or slow, puffs a little black smoke when check engine light flashes then stalls. Have to wait a minute before it starts (cranks) again. Won't hold trouble codes if not cranked. (resets codes). Percision Tune ran the Diagnostic test for 2 hours and said it might be the computer. Thoughts??

Take it to a reputable independent repair shop that isn't a chain...that employees Master L-1 Technicians. Chain stores can barely change oil, let alone diagnose complicated issues.

SOURCE: car stops running after 15 minutes

P1446 reads, manufacturer control auxiliary emission controls. Not positive but a look at the fuel cap( see if it is twisting and securing correctly), check the vacuum lines in the engine compartment (for damage), could be related to the evap. system.

Thats a classic sign of having your engine run too rich. That puffy layer of ash is carbon which means your engine is not burning gas properly or completely which means is misfiring thats why the car is shaking. Try having your oxygen sensors checked and make sure you are using good fuel.

Check the ECM relay. Nissan has a recall for that relay, for that year. You can swith the relay with your defogger relay which should be next to it. The relay box is located under the hood on the passenger side. Hope this helps. Here's a re call link.http://www.thenewx.org/forum/showthread.php?t=39850
