Yes the radio needs to be reset make sure you have the radio code,

Unfortunately, only a VW dealer can get the code for you. Fortunately, it should be a free service if you supply the serial number. I think there should be a service on the web for things like this. Vw has gone the other way. They no longer make a peoples car. It is a computer on wheels, and it seems to have its share of problems. I am good at fixing them, but its not your daddy's VW.
The number would be on the owners manual, if you have it. On the inside cover most likely.

check with vw theres a technical service bulletin issued in dec o7 number 0107-70 its for code P0299 on 2006--- 2.0L turbo vw engines

Call a VW Dealership and give them these numbers. They will then give the code.

well of corse its a VW the really only want the official radio that cam with the car.. you have to talk to a dealer and its a universal code they have them

I have this same issue, it is not code related, I have a code and the radio works just fine WHEN THE CAR IS OFF. As soon as the engine starts, the radio loses power, did you ever find a solution to this?

Fuse number 42 is for the radio reset. Pull it out and put it back in. It's a warranty problem, expired now no doubt.
