You mean wont CRANK or CRANKS but WONT RUN???? 4 cyl or V6 auto or manual trans????????? The 8th VIN digit would be most helpful as there are 4 different engines for that car. Its really cheaper to check items before you replace them. The starter should have a smaller BLACK wire that should have power on it when trying to crank the car. You say it wont crank, then check the neutral switch on the trans. Try putting it in neutral to start it. If it has a manual trans, the clutch switch on the pedal may be bad. There is a starter relay in the fuse box under the hood that powers the starter, does it click if you turn the key to start? if it does then the relay is at least trying to work, but doenst mean the contacts inside are good, If it does not click, then the neutral switch may be bad.Check the BLACK/YELLOW wire at the trans switch, if it has power on it, the switch may be bad, ground that (Black/Yellow)wire and see if it cranks. I dont know if there are any other relays in the fuse box that you can swap for the starter relay for test purposes.

I am a self employed and have a web site. if a motor cranks and does not start that has nothing to do with a starter or battery. we need to see if you have gas and spark. is there a buzzing noise in the gas tank when you turn the key. if so you have gas. now we need to see if you have spark. takes 2 people. pull a spark plug wire out and stick a screw driver in the boot and stand back and have someone crank the motor if you see spark then you have spark.if you do not see when you are looking at a bad crank position sensor. an other question does the motor turn very fast, and there is also a fuel pump shut off switch in the trunk thank you ted

1999 ford contour won't start. The battery is good and the alternator has been checked and is good. It will start when it is jumped but as soon as the cables are removed it dies and will not start again.

Ck for corrosion in the battery ends, if it is a side post you will have to pull the rubber back to access the metal part. To test you could install a jumper cable from the neg batter connection to large bolt on engine. Then try to start

Turned car off and wont restart

Is it cranking slower than normal? Check all the battery connections, and the connections to the starter and the start relay. Check resistance through the start relay coil: if it's too high, then change it. Have the starter checked (remove it and take it to some place like AutoZone that will check it for free.) Check to see if you're getting spark to the plugs: if not, then possibly a bad ignition module. If all these check out, then you may have a fuel delivery problem.

My 1999 Ford Contour sport has been sitting for a couple years, I'm not much of a car guy so I don't really know how to start it up now. It wont start, and I need help, Thanks

If you think the pistons are rusted Put a socket on the front of the front of the crank shaft and try turning the socket with a 2ft breaker in a clockwise direction. If engine rotates start checking electrical connections at the battery.Dont just check positive connections check ground connections at frame; starter ,engine and body also.

My 1999 Ford Contour SE wont start

It's possible that the defective plugs blew out the Ignition Control Module. Are you getting any spark from the plugs? Try removing one of the plug leads, hold it about 1/4" from a metal surface, and have someone crank the engine. You should see a strong spark. If not, then I'd replace the ICM and see what happens.
