This is a fault mode in which the transmission either loses electrical power or the PCM deactivates all of the electronics. The transmission will default to max line pressure. The driver will have Reverse and 3rd, with manual 2nd available by putting the gearshift in 2 or 1 (doesn't matter). 1st, 4th, and TCC lockup will not be available. It will not hurt the car to drive it like this for short periods, but use manual 2nd to get the car moving, and be aware that the trans will generate more heat than normal while operating in limp-home mode due to increased torque converter slippage during 2nd gear starts and no lockup in 3rd gear.

Trans shifts into gear harshly, car feels sluggish off the line
, No 1st, 4th or TCC lockup available, Manual 2nd, 3rd and Reverse are only available gears, CEL is on: Transmission is either in limp-home mode or has lost electrical power. If there are lots of error codes in the PCM, check the under hood fuse that powers the transmission, and if it pops again, look for a short in that circuit like an O2 sensor harness touching exhaust. Otherwise, check PCM codes for a particular fault in the transmission causing the PCM to put it in limp-home mode.

No 1st or 4th available; trans shifts 2nd to 3rd by itself in D or OD and locks the converter : ShiftA solenoid failed. Easy fix in the pan. Or a wiring problem from PCM to trans.. or PCM.

Car goes into gear but feels very sluggish like the brakes are dragging, but it will roll easily (starts out in 4th gear), you manually shift to 2 to get it moving, once it's moving you put it back in OD and the car shifts 3rd to 4th on its own and locks the converter at the appropriate time: ShiftB solenoid failed: Easy fix in the pan. Or a wiring problem from PCM to trans.. or PCM.

SOURCE: engine hesitates under 2000rpm in 1st and 2nd

It may be your map or maf sensor the connection to it to the manifold could be defective, have you noticed poor fuel mileage? if so then check it, also does it idle rought on start up or does it rev high when first started up? If it does you need to chek for vachum leak you can use a can of carburater cleaner to spray around hoses and see if it smooths out if it does at the area you spray it on that is your problem.

SOURCE: I cant put my car into first, second or reverse gear

u need to adjust the shift linkage cables, the adjustment is made at the trans end of the shift cables, very involved, u will need a repair manual to get it right and also a possible set of new shift cables as well..

SOURCE: cant get 1st gear. 2nd gear nosiey and crunches,

check the gear linkage first for smooth operation, then check/or change your gearbox fluid with the following (before going and ordering a gearbox rebuild - it's much cheaper). Make sure you have it filled to the correct level (see below).

The reverse switch is located on the gearbox, and the switch I have heard, do fail (or you have a short in it's wiring).
Manual transaxle and transfer case:
Hypoid Gear Oil, SAE 75W-90 or 75W-85W conforming to API classification GL-4

Rear differential:
Hypoid Gear Oil API classification GL-5 or higher

Above -23ºC (-10ºF)
SAE 90, 85W-90, 80W-90
From -34ºC (-30ºF) to -23ºC (-10ºF)
SAE 80W, 80W-90
Below -34ºC (-30ºF)
SAE 75W

Lubricant capacities (from the service manuals)
Manual transaxle [to bottom of filler hole]:
FWD: 2.3 L (2.4 qts)
AWD: 2.4 L (2.5 qts)

Chevy 1500 manual 5 speed lost 1st and 2nd gear but everything else works great even reverse but sometimes I will lose reverse and gain my 1st and 2nd gear back have any ideas

cannot loose gears as all gears are constant mesh with the connection being a toothed dog at the synchro drums, so you will have to more specific as to the problem
Are you slashing the gear on selection which I suspect is what is wrong and if that is the case replace the clutch master cylinder and bleed the system or if cable operation adjust the cable or replace it

07 Tahoe only has 1st and 3rd gears.

2nd and 4th gear band is not applying. Possibly worn out. It comes on in 2nd and Overdrive. If this is the case, transmission will have to be overhauled.

Only reverse works. No foward gears.

No forward movement in OD or D, but L2, L1 and R work: Forward sprag is broken. R&R. Try not to run or drive the car or further damage could result.

Do you have manual 1st? If so, can you shift through the gears...i.e. manual 1st to manual 2nd then 'D' then 'OD'??? Only 1st and 2nd gears use the forward sprag unless the LO/Rev clutch is engaged...i.e. 1st and 2nd if in "drive". If you can shift threw the gears manually then, yes, your forward sprag broke.

If no manual 1st then your sprag is not what broke. Sounds like you blew up the rear planet. If you pull the pan and find chunks of iron and steel, then that is probably what happened. If you have reverse then it is not the pump. If the pump was bad you would have no line pressure and it would slip in rev. or no rev. Not the beef sun shell either because you have rev., a broken sun shell would cause no 2nd, 4th and rev. gears. Either way the trans needs to come out and torn down and it will be easily found what went. Good luck and thank you for using Fixya.

When my 1996 Legacy had stood all night out in the cold (this winter and spring) I noticed that putting the gear from 1st to 2nd was problemmatic. It felt a bit like two toothed wheels not correctly...

I would say, from your explanation, that the gear oil in it may be too heavy of a weight. Was it changed, or maybe from a previous owner? I would recommend the stock fluid and weight as this is always a safe bet. Hope this may get you free'd up for the next cold weather!
