97 mountaineer check engine light on- very little power

My mountaineer's check engine light just recently came on (133,000 miles) and it has almost no power. It starts right up but when you take it down the road it hesitates, spits & sputters, and seems to have a miss especially going uphill. You can smash it to the floor and it barely moves and this thing used to fly! Motor is the 5.0 w/ auto tranny. It had been sitting for about 4 months and I just started to run it full time recently. All gauges are giving normal readings! I know you have to check the codes but does anyone else know from experience?

try cleaning out the idle control Valve. also called an IAC. Using brake cleaner remove the duct from the air cleaner and spray directly at the valve. It sits near the opening . It is a small component with 2 small hoses. If you can, remove it and spray right into the 2 holes on the underside. If that is not the problem it could be the EGR valve.Sludge bulidup in the IAC is a common problem.

SOURCE: In 97 mercury mountaineer, how to turn off "check engine" light

Go to the local parts store, have them check the codes (they will do this for free usually). It will tell you what sensor needs to be checked/replaced. Once the part is replaced, it will clear on its own. They can also reset the code, but it will come back if the trouble persists.

97 mercury mountaineer. won't start

hi,

watch your oil pressure when cranking, you have to have some oil pressure to get the fuel system to start. you may have to find the hot wire at the relay and energize it to see if it is indeed the fuel pump going out. if its been sitting and its a 97 the fuel pump just might have went, you can also try hitting the gas tank from the outside in the middle to see if that works too. have a water hose or fire extinguisher around when your working on fuel system and leave one of your battery cable a little loose..

Indicator light said check transmition

Is it the check engine light or the oil light coming on? Where is your dipstick? and if it is the oil light, put a quart of oil in before you go anywhere and then buy a dipstick. If it is the service engine light only just drive it for 20 miles without a problem.

Speedometer not working, high revs & won't shift out of low gear

Your issue is a bad "speed sensor". Your speedometer is controlled by a sensor in your transmission, and when it quits working your speedometer will not work, it can cause very irregular shift patterns and slipping. Replacing your speed sensor should resolve your issues.

I hope this helps you, and I wish you luck on your repair.
