Hi. Your symptoms are a strong indication of major sludge build up in the block region. This type of thick build up will clog up the oil ports, thus, reducing the normal flow of lubricant throughout the engine. This will cause fluctuating oil pressure, as well. Although this issue is a common cause of your symptoms, there are others. The next cause of fluctuating oil pressure will be a failing oil pump. This device can fail mechanically(gear failure). When this occurs, the engine oil will not circulate properly, thus causing the symptoms you are experiencing.

In conclusion, This type of problem will require you to administer a manual oil pressure test. This will confirm the oil pump failure. If the pressure test reveals that, indeed, the engines pressure readings are low, the oil pump will be the culprit. I recommend to administer a engine flush, and change the oil pump and oil pump screen, as well. Now, if the manual pressure test reveals that the pressure is optimal, this will indicate that the presser switch(sending unit) is faulty.

Has 358000 miles, just had leaks repaired. Twice since my oil pressure gauge reads no pressure but not all the time? Why

1. Oil Pressure Gauge Not Working You will notice this happens when your oil pressure gauge is not reading, whether the engine is turned off, idle or running. Try to step on the gas to rev up the engine. If the oil pressure gauge still doesn't change its reading, your gauge is busted. It's best to replace it as soon as possible because you won't have any idea if your car is already overheating or not.
2. Oil Pressure Gauge Reading Too Low When your engine is idle, the oil pressure gauge will have a low reading. When the engine starts running or when you're already cruising or on the freeway, your gauge's reading should have increased. If it stays on a low reading, then you now your oil pressure gauge is broken.
3. Oil Pressure Gauge Reading Too High Another common oil pressure gauge problem is when your oil pressure gauge is reading too high when your engine is idle or when it's turned off. Rep

Oil pressure problem

in a shop we ignore the dash gauges and use REAL gauges.
we attach a real gauge to the sender port. on engine block.
and read the true pressure.
the lamp on most cars go on at 3 to 5psi.
this is catastrophic failure. that low.

my guess, is you let oil drop and you wrecked bearings.
but let the real gauge prove that , dont guess.

Low oil pressure

The light should come on when oil pressure drops below 5psi (us).
The oil pressure could actually be low, or the switch could be faulty.

Oil pressure gauge reads 78

not all cars read the same, when the engines come down the assembly line they can vary from 15lbs ,just about enough to make the oil pressure light go out to anything up to 70lbs ,this depends on the clearances withing the engine so a decent oil pump and low tolerances can give this reading where as a engine with sloppy clearances will be low so ignore the pundits and bar room mechanics and leave well alone

Oil pressure guage drops low when at idle but when excelerating reads normal [email protected]

Mine does the same thing, the gauge is like a tachometer, it revs like crazy, but holds steady at high speed, it goes down to about 10 at idle, 35 at cruise speed and it will go up to 55 if I step on it. But remember it is just a pressure gauge, it will read this pressure with 1 qt of oil in there, so don't use it for a level indicator. Check the oil, and you know if it has oil in it. Hope this helps.

Oil lamp lights at 750rpms

750 rpm?

your revs are too low.

The engine speed drives the oil pump via the timing belt.

too low revs = poor pump speed = low pressure.

I'll bet when you rev the idle speed faster, the warning goes off?

Vw polo 1.4 1999 oil light comes on at 3000 revs filter ok oil level ok new oil pump fitted

Had exactly the same problem, completely baffled us until we discovered that the it was the oil pressure switch. We had already replaced it with a new one and then that didnt fix it so we fitted a new oil pump, but as soon as it was revved over 3000 revs the oil light came on. It turns out that there is actually a choice of 2 oil pressure switches for this car (1999 1.4 polo) one works only low pressure (black cap) and is the wrong one, the other works on a higher racio (green cap) its the high pressure one you need. If the oil light was on at tick over or below 3000 revs then its the lower oil pressure switch needed, above 3000 its the higher one. The parts people insisted there was only one, but there is definately a choice of 2 and it fixed ours instantly.
If it was an older model they actually have 2 switches on the car itself and one is a high pressure and one is a low pressure (just incase anyone needed to know)
