2000 honda odyssey intermittently will not start. The battery is new, alternator checks out fine, sometimes the gear shifter will not move. The only way to get it started when this happens is to get the car out of gear while depressing the brake pedal and turning the key a few times until it starts. Once it starts up it will be fine for a couple of days. it seems to act up more in the cold weather.

Park neutral safety switch , maybe . Try moving the gear shifter to neutral an see if it starts then . Here is a video to watch , this is on a honda but your vehicle has the same safety switch . 2006 Honda Odyssey Intermittent No Crank No Start No Codes
Your idle air control motor or valve may be faulty. Or the throttle position sensor may be out of whack, out of range. It sounds like a high idle problem, not a problem in the gearbox. Have the engine computer scanned for any trouble codes.
Good luck.
Your vehicle is equiped with a feature that if the brake is not pressed in the gear shifter will not come out of park. If this feature has gone bad you can bypass it. I provided you with the proper way to do it below. I hope this helps and good luck.
You might want to have someone do a cranking test on your car.
There's alot of reason why, but this might be the cause:
1.Sometime the battery will test good, but it's not alway good. A easy to test, when your
car is cranking slow. Have other car jump yours or use a jumper pack to jump you car. If yor car crank nomal and fire up. You got a bad battery.
2.check your connector at the starter. loose or rusted connector will cause that.
3. you might have a bad starter that is starting to fail.
I don't think your alternator will be causing your problem because in alot of case that the alternator has fail, the battery light will come on.
good luck and hope this info help you in your quest.
Probably when the dealer is testing it is fine because the problem is intermittent. There may be a dead spot in the starter so when it hits that spot it acts up but other times its not on that spot its fine. Replace your starter and you will probably get rid of the problem.
The gear range switch on the back of the transmission is either bad or out of adjustment. To adjust, try removing the switch and put it in the neutral position (it should click into this spot). Then put the transmission in neutral and reinstall the switch being careful not to let the switch turn at all during re-install. There is a few degrees of adjustment available by turning the switch in either direction as well if it is still off. The car should only start in park or neutral and the reverse lights should only come on when in reverse.
You will see a little rectangle shape of plastic in front of the gauge's, pop that peice out and insert the key, that should allow you to change the gears.
