My 2004 maxima will not start at times engine turns over but willnot start after sitting for a hour or more engine starts up and runs fine what is my problem

Do you have a check engine on? If so take it to auto zone they can read your code for free and tell you what's wrong.

Sounds like a faulty fuel pressure regulator, or possibly the MAF sensor.

Not sure on model but to me sounds like its a dodgey valve lifter when the seals start to go they cannot hold the oil and when there under pressure they basically empty them selves hence when you turn the engine off and restart you get a rattle sound untill the valve fills again as long as the cars running ok leave it untill you have to replace them unless there easy to do sone are sone are a pain

Try this next time you start it. Turn the key to the run position, do not start the engine. Wait 3-5 seconds and turn the key off. Turn the key right back to the on position and wait for 3-5 seconds. Turn the key off. Repeat the above one more time. Now try to start. If it starts right up you have a fuel supply problem. Either the fuel pump is bleeding off or the fuel pressure regulator is leaking. Pumping the pedal is doing nothing besides buying time for the fuel system to pressurize. Do you own a scan tool ? One that shows engine sensor data parameters ? Checking sensor data would be the thing to do .

Replace the fuel filter to help the fuel pump, but it sounds like the fuel pump check valve has gone bad and your losing your fuel pressure to start the engine. Your going to have to keep priming the fuel system by turning the ignition key to the run position for 5 seconds 3 times before you try to start the engine. The only fix for this is to replace the fuel pump, and that is costly. Good luck and take note: the fuel pump has a life time of around 150,000 miles and anything past that is borrowed time.

It sounds like a tork conveter lockup switch, have the transmisson serviced oil and filter changed then and add Lucas transmisson treatment to help smooth out hte shifting pattern and stop the problem if there was drag on the clutches it may have stalled out.

try turning the key to the run position and let it sit for a few seconds then try to start it. let me know what happens

I have the same issue with my 2004 maxima.The service techs said it was the timing chain tensioners .Since they are hydaulic and they powered by the oil in the car .It is recommended to purge the the engine every time the noise starts to come back. I brought some an it really freaking work because I started to run it into a tree and go buy a toyota
