My '98 Buick Regal won't start randomly but fires right up when it does. randomly when you turn the key to start it does absolutely nothing. No warning lights or clicks - absolutely nothing. All the regular dash lights and the seat belt warning beeps come on like normal in accessory position. If i rapidly continue to try to start it , it will eventually start. Sometimes after 20 turns sometimes it takes over 100. The dealer said it needs a whole new steering column and ignition bevause some kind of security switch is bad. Any help??

I ran into this problem w/a 98 GS. One branch of the ignition switch was not making contact because the switch, which is plastic, melted around the terminal and created an intermittent contact. To verify the problem. go to the fuse box & run a jumper wire from the hot side of the directional fuse to the hot side of the windshield wiper fuse. This will feed power to the circuit that the switch isn't powering. If this gives you 100% reliability, replace the switch.

It dosent need a new steering column. But It very well may need an ingnition position sensor. It is a sensor that identifies what position the key is in. Obviously if it was malfunctioning it would not recognize you have the key in the start position, and when it does it suddenly fires. I had a 95 Regal that had the same problem, not a cheap one but pretty necessary.

98 Buick Regal GS...I've been having the exact same problem with starting...Also when not starting when I put the key in the accessory position with all the auxiliary lights in the dash displayed I cannot shift the car out of park? Would this be the same issue with the ignition position sensor?? Thanks!

1998 Buick Skylark Theft System light on won't start. I have no chip in my key, and it starts every time for months than randomly it won't start for a day or week.

Right around 98 GM starting using Passlock antitheft instead of the old Vats system which had the visible chip in the key. Your system most likely has a transponder in the key head. Same idea, just a newer system. Go to this link. It explains the problem along with a few ways you can fix it yourself with out having to buy multiple parts that may not be broken.

Turns over and won't start, replaced fuel filter and just turns over and almost fires

Almost fires? Do you mean it does fire some, that you know the plugs are getting spark? If so, then you probably need to have your fuel pressure tested to see if pump is working properly. Can you hear the pump buzz on briefly when you turn key to on? It should come on for a couple of seconds to pressurize the lines. If you don't hear it, then your pump may be bad, or something not turning pump on. Good luck.

My Buick Regal GS 98' has electrical issues, wont start, or if It does sometimes the dash goes crazy, or it stalls. Have replaced the turn switch. Could the power windows on driver side be problem? How do...

I had the same problem with my 98 regal. I replaced a wiring harness on the steering column that has heavy gadge wires coming from the fire wall and going to a small black box directly below the ignition switch.Since I replaced it I have not had any problems

1999 Buick regal Security light on. Won't start.

I had the same problem with my 95 Lesabre. The owners manual says to take the key out, and wait 3 minutes(until the light goes off). It should fire right up.
