You have the wrong pulley on the alternator. Aftermarket replacement Capri alternators use a pulley that fits their smaller shaft, and its really the wrong one for the Capri (this is a VERY common Capri problem)...using an industrial type belt will help, but you really need a OEM type alternator/pulley back in there...good luck...Chris

I need to replace the alternator belt on my 1991 Mercury Capri

This is easiest to get to if you drive the car up on ramps and work from both underneath and above.
Remove the undercage protective shields to expose it.
Belt will cost about $10.

I have a 1993 mercury capri convertible. I have replaced the water pump and the alternator which the vbelt sits on. The alternator belt squeaks and burns and breaks when it is on tight. I loosened it up....

Most after market replacement alternators have the wrong pulley installed...the shafts are different sizes, so you cannot even use your old pulley. Best is to have the original alternator rebuilt. Alternative is to use a heavy duty industrial belt, like a Gates...not a perfect solution, but it will help...good luck...Chris

Alternator belt keeps breaking

Either you have a pully that has a bad bearing, or the belt tension is going bad. One of the two will cause this.
