Tip & How-To about Chevrolet 2500

All Cars ABS light on

For those of you that have abs brakes if the brake light comes on what happens Is it goes into standard brake mode. This means that the brakes lock up as if they had no abs system so if you jam the brake pedal down the wheels will stop spinning. If you are in wet weather or on ice it could cause a skid and cause you not to turn while slamming on the brakes. So if you have the ABS light on you need to have them checked but does not mean you have to take it to the shop right then it can be later, be aware that extended use without the ABS being serviced could cause damage to the ABS system. Most ABS lights are caused by a dirty magnetic ring on one wheel, on rear wheel drive cars it could be the one on the end of the transmission or the front of the differential. These put out 2.5 volts dc to test use Digital meter put it on 5 volts dc and spin the wheel with the connector disconnected probe the ring connector to see if yo have 2.5 volts if not it has a broken ring or wire, if the magnetic ring is broken it will have to be replaced. Most models have to have the rotor replaced on the front end and the sensor on the rear end.

have vehicle scanned for trouble code possible abs sensor or hub going bad --when abs goes out you still have standard / conventional brakes [ means if you slam on brakes they will lock /skid ] but your brakes will work normal

What does the abs light on mean in a 1996 chevy Corsica

Its the Auto Braking System.
This is the system that pulses your brake to reduce skidding when braking on gravel, ice, wet pavement...etc.
When this light comes on...more than likely it won't function correctly and your tires will lock up and skid.
Fixing the problem usually requires a brake job / brake replacement all the way around.

Hope this helps...

ABS light occasionally comes on, only when making a turn. I stop, turn off motor and restart. It's fine and may not happen again for a few days. Until I get to a mechanic, is it safe to drive?

Yes she is still safe to drive. If the light is on, the abs system is disabled and the brakes revert to standard type brakes, meaning they may lock up during hard or emergency stops.

ABS LIGHT COMES ON AND DISENGAGES THE ABS BUT

When the ABS light is on the ABS system is deactivated. Meaning, when the abs is light is on and you brake, the tires will lock up with heavy braking.

Escapes have a common issue of the ABS excitor rings cracking causing ABS problems. Sometimes it activates on almost every brake application. It may set a code in the ABS computer for an intermitten wheel speed sensor or no wheel speed signal. Check all the "rings" on the outside of all four axleshafts. If none of the rings are cracked it is likely a bad ABS wheel speed sensor.
