If the check engine light does not light up on the dash when you turn on the ignition, at those times when your jeep doesn't want to start, then your main jeep ecm is in need of repair. The fuel pump relay will get energized only after that check engine light comes on. It's a known problem, especially with the first and second year production Grand Cherokees, 93 and 94.
if the starter is turning, but the motor isnt, its the starter failing to engage the flywheel. The rotation of the starter is supposed to force a gear forward to engage the flywheel, when that gear freezes up, the starter spins and the motor doesnt.you can try givinbg the starter a few sharp taps with a small hammer or wrench to see if it frees up
The first years of that body shape, like the 93 Grand Cherokee, had ecu computer problems. Next time it won't start, check to see if the check engine light does lights up on the dash, when you turn the ignition on, before cranking. If it does not, the fuel pump will not kick on, until that check engine light does come on. It's referred to as the delayed check engine light problem, on early to mid 90's Jeeps. If you find out that is indeed the problem, you can have the ecu computer repaired.
my 1996 jeep grand cherokee lmtd. won't start did tune up. cranks but
no fire. please help. engine code 54 shows up . cam shaft positioning
no signal. . tested all circuit. changed cam shaft positioning sensor

OK...I have a 93 outside...one diagram I have shows an ignition module next to coil...but there is none on mine, (4.0 engine) Two items to check are crank sensor and cam sensor inside distributor. Test procedure can be found in just about any manual including haynes. You will need a decent volt/ohm meter to do testing. You can also check codes by turning ignition switch on/off three times, leaving it on the third time. Check engine will flash code #'s (ex: one flash, pause two flashes= the number twelve.then followed by a longer pause then another set of flashes etc.)
