Transmittion dose not shift - is the shift solenoid on the inside of trans or can you see it from the outside
transmittion is a 1997 Pontiac sunfire model 4t40e
It's inside the transmission. I believe that it's under the side pan, which is where the valve body is located. It's NOT a good location to have to remove a side pan and re-install while it's in the vehicle. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone but a professional.

3.0L V6 (and box behind it?) post a problem fist the A/t box list of failures is 20 paged + long, name one? that way we the blind can be on the same page? and there is not just one box solenoid/the word is solenoid's (MANY INSIDE IT,DEEP) say my a/t box shifts funny?, late? or slips? or will not shift in drive,1,2,3,4,5 or sticks at 2.??????? DRIVE DEAD,REVERSE DEAD , low dead PRNDL some of these 3.0L have a mazda transmission called Mazda trans.; Trans. code FNR5 seen here all
I had a 1995 firebird 6spd. I ran Royal Purple oil in the trans, Nitrous..etc.. I beat on it a little but not much. The car sat outside since I owned it (15+yrs)..
One year I went out and I had the same problem.. If I pushed REALLY hard to the right it would go over - and then smooth as butter it would go UP into reverse.. Driving the car & warming up the trans did little..
>> I suspect it was the REVERSE LOCKOUT solenoid.. (I sold the car the next year)
Like the skip-shift solenoid works - I figured it was the Reverse Solenoid that had frozen up..
Never confirmed... But I know I never thrashed on it so bad as to bend something inside the trans..
Clutch worked great - so no issues with it binding while trying to engage gears.
You might remove the solenoid and see if it plunges in and out without power / using your hand to compress it in.. Also check the shifting while it is out...
The transmission control module is part of the engine controller in the firewall behind left fenderwell. There is a solenoid block inside the Transmission pan that contains 5 solenoids , 2 shift,1 coast , 1 tcc and 1 pressure control.Various engine sensors also input into the transmission controller such as TPS ( throttle position sensor ) , map/mass ( engine load ) , and engine rpm. Also there is a trans temp sensor built into solenoid block and a range sensor on the side of trans that tells the computer where there gear selector is.Vehicle speed sensor also inputs into transmission controller. It takes a lot of data to decide what gear the transmission should be in.
Inside transmission oil pan, next to the filter.
It contains pressure regulator and shift solenoids
Trans won't shift correctly, unless the solenoids are clean and working correctly.
USUALLY A SHIFT SOLENOID DTC IS REPAIRED BY REPLACING THE TRANS SOLENOID PACK ASSEMBLY..LOCATED ON OUTSIDE OF TRANSMISSION..YOU MUST BE CAREFUL WHEN CHANGING PACK..CLEAN ALL DIRT/DEBRIS FROM OUTSIDE OF PACK..YOU DON'T WANT ANY DIRT TO ENTER TRANSMISSION..SOLENOID IS A SMALL BOX LOCATED ON SIDE OF TRANS FACING FRONT OF VEHICLE..YOU MUST REMOVE TRANS COOLER LINE HOSES FROM FITTINGS ON TRANS..REMOVE INPUT SPEED SENSOR..UNPLUG PACK..8MM SCREW HOLDS IT..3 BOLTS HOLD PACK TO TRANS..YOU MUST CLEAN ALL GASKET RESIDUE THOROUGHLY BEFORE INSTALLING PACK..I'D RECOMMEND GETTING SOMEONE WHO HAS DONE THIS BEFORE IF YOU ARE NOT COMFORTABLE DOING THIS..I HOPE THIS HELPS
shift solenoid for gear 1-2 is stuck off, replace it, it is inside the trans, you remove the trans pan to access the solenoid, it is attached to the valve body.
what is the code? by the way the all the solenoids for the trans are on the inside if the trans, I know of no car that has these on the outside since they control hydraulic fluid passages, suggest you have another shop look at this, the actual labor to relace the solenoids is about 2 hours.
