Is this the headlight bulb replacement or headlight (assembly) replacement? For bulb replacement:
1. Disconnect negative side of battery.
2. Open hood.
3. Reach behind the neadlight assembly and disconnect the wiring connectors.
4. There is a locking ring around the back of the headlight assembly. Turn this counterclockwise.
5. Gently pull out the bulb.
6. Insert new bulb into the locking ring.
7. Place these back onto back opening and turn clockwise making sure it is flush and totally engaged.
8. Replug wiring connector.
9. Reconnect negative side of battery.
10. LIGHTS!!

I take based upon your rating that it was the headlight assembly and not the bulb? For headlight housing removal here is the following:

    1. Disconnect the negative side of battery.

    2. WAIT AT LEAST 2-MINUTES for the Air Bag System to de-energize! If not BOOM - Airbag Deployment!

    3. Remove the Radiator Grille:

    a. Remove the grille mounting screws

    b. Detach the bottom clips

    c. Remove Grille.

    4. Grasp the lower edge of the headlight assembly and detach it from the lower pivots.

    5. Grasp the top edge of the headlight assembly and detach it from the upper pivots.

    6. Disconnect the wiring connectors.

    Installation is reverse of removal.

Good Luck and let me know if this worked. Also if a solution has not met your needs, Add a Comment and click on "Add Comments". You do not have to accept the answer, just add the comment. I need to replace a 2000 jeep cherokee laredo headlight bulb. How do you get the headlight fixture out. I removed the screw that I thought was it but it did not budge... CJ

There is no screw involved. You do not remove the headlight housing. Look for wires going to the back of the headlight you should see a plastic retainer nut, take the nut off, pull out the pigtail connector and twist to the left to remove it from headlight housing, then pull the bulb out and replace. No screwdriver or any tools required.
P.S. Your local parts store usually will do this for you or show you how for free. As long as you buy the bulb from them.

96 Jeep Cherokee headlights go on and off after being on a while.

It sounds like the relay switch is weak or going bad. It gets power and then stays closed giving 12V to the lights. Try replacing the relay.
