Gas gauge light comes on, how much gas is left

Normally when the gas indicator light comes on, you have about 2 gallons left. Fill up your gas tank and reset your trip counter. Next time your gas indicator light comes on, check how many miles are on your trip counter. Use that number as a guide to when you should fill up with gas. It varies for every car. Usually 1-1.5 gallons when the low fuel light comes on. I drove my last '93 Ford Taurus around until the gauge said it was empty. Lifted the car and took the gas tank off and it had 3 or more gallons still in it. Here's some fun, zero your odometer, fill the gas tank and drive it until the low fuel light comes on. Then drive it till it dies out, obviously somewhere near home or where someone can drop off a full gas can.

The fuel pump is kept cool by the fuel in the tank. It is rare for a Toyota fuel pump to fail but if your running it that low on gas your not helping last any longer. I would suggest not letting your tank get below a quarter tank. That way you will never have to worry about whether or not the light will come on. Typical there would be about a gallon or less of fuel in the tank before the light would come on. If it did come on you would have about 20 miles r so of fuel left in the tank.

It sounds like you might have a poor ground connection somewhere. You can test each individual gauge for full travel by grounding the wire the goes the each gauges individual sender. In other words to check the temp gauge, ground the wire that goes to the temp sender. The temp sender is in the left cylinder head between the #1 and #2 spark plug ( looks like a brass pipe plug with a single wire coming from it) if you ground the wire with the key on (engine off) the gauge should go to the end of the scale (hot) with the wire off it should go to full cold. You can do this with the gas gauge too but not the amp gauge or volt meter. If the volt gauge is reading low (if it has one) and you know that battery voltage is good (don't guess, measure with a multi-meter) there has to be a poor connection somewhere.

When the light comes on you typically have 40miles or less before your are completely out of fuel. This may vary however due to driving conditions, fuel gauge accuracy etc.

I'm not sure I am understanding your question. The low Fuel indicator light comes on, depending on how sensitive it is set, when you have between 2 and 5 gallons of gas left in the tank. This also depends on how accurate your fuel level sending unit is reading the fuel level in the tank. The low fuel level light depends on the level of fuel in the tank itself but other than using that sensor it has nothing to do with the fuel gauge itself. The fuel gauge may or may not be accurately showing the fuel level.

CHECK YOUR BRAKE FLUID LEVEL, IF ITS LOW THE LIGHT CAN GO ON AND OFF OVER BUMPS. YOU MAY ALSO NEED BRAKES. THE FLUID IS IN THE CALIPERS.

THE FUEL GAGE PROBLEM IS MOST LIKELY THE FUEL LEVEL SENSOR.
