Mcdevito75 here, You can check the cold idle switch or if equipt the idle speed motor, Where they are exactly is ?? try to contact a Saturn Dealership or auto parts store.
Get to an Autozone or similar store that will check the codes for free. There are many possibilities -- too many to guess without the codes. Post the codes and let's see if we can figure it out.
I have fixed SES light issues on my 99 SL1, same engine larger car, by replacing the up and down stream O2 sensors and replacing the EGR valve. Autozone can stick an analyzer on it for free and tell you what the error code indicates. It is usually easier to do O2 sensors if you have a lift but a muffler shop can quickly swap them for you cheaply. I got the parts much cheaper on ebay than from parts stores. Do not use a used EGR valve, make sure you replace the gasket and thoroughly clean both metal surfaces before reassembly. I had the idle issue once as well, I wonder do folks behind you ever come up and tell you that your car stinks of gas?
