My car is a 1999 Saturn SC1. The engine races and takes a looong time to return to idle, and only fully returns to idle when the car stops. And the Service Engine Soon light is on. I'm pretty mechanical; anything I can check?
Get to an Autozone or similar store that will check the codes for free. There are many possibilities -- too many to guess without the codes. I have fixed SES light issues on my 99 SL1, same engine larger car, by replacing the up and down stream O2 sensors and replacing the EGR valve. Autozone can stick an analyzer on it for free and tell you what the error code indicates. It is usually easier to do O2 sensors if you have a lift but a muffler shop can quickly swap them for you cheaply. I got the parts much cheaper on ebay than from parts stores. Do not use a used EGR valve, make sure you replace the gasket and thoroughly clean both metal surfaces before reassembly. Mcdevito75 here, You can check the cold idle switch or if equipt the idle speed motor, Where they are exactly is ?? try to contact a Saturn Dealership or auto parts store.

sc1 means saturn coupe with a single overhead cam engine sl1 means saturn sedan with a single overhead cam engine same engine and same parts for both these cars
You either have a bad engine coolant temp sensor & connector.Located under upper radiator hose at cylinder head Yellow & black wire.Original sensor is ceramic & replacement will be brass from saturn.Also you may check for vacuum leaks at PCV hose & valve.Hope this helps
