The first thing to check is to carefully examine the ignition key. If it is worn down, or even slightly bent, get a new key cut. If you don't have a key in good shape to copy from, your Toyota dealer can cut one, if they know your VIN number. If your key looks good, the most likely suspect is your ignition lock cylinder. You can try lubing it with a little graphite lock lube, but no WD-40 or anything!

Its probably a worn key and barell,an easy way to find out is to try another key or get your key cut with a fresh one as it will work a little better and even squirt a little crc,wd 40 in the ignition key slot this should help,worst case scenerio replace the barell but you shouldnt need to

This 30-minute learn procedure should be used when all vehicle keys are desired to be replaced or reprogrammed. This procedure will erase all previously learned vehicle keys from the TDM. Once the 30-minute learn procedure has been completed, any remaining vehicle keys may be programmed using the Adding Keys procedure to ensure their continued functionality.
  1. With an unlearned master vehicle key, turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Observe the security indicator, after approximately 10 minutes the telltale will turn off.
  3. Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 5 seconds.
  4. Repeat steps 1-3 two more times for a total of 3 cycles or 30 minutes.
    5. Important: The TDM learns the key transponder information upon the ignition switch transition from OFF to ON. You must turn the ignition OFF before attempting to start the vehicle.
  5. With a master vehicle key, start the vehicle. The vehicle has now learned the key transponder information.
  6. If additional keys are required to be learned, refer to Adding Keys.
  7. With a scan tool, clear any DTCs.

Engine turns over but will not start
This sounds like the antitheft transponder that sits around the ignition key that picks up you code from the key, when you put your key into the ignition does the light go off on the dash board if not the that what your trouble is the light should go out as soon as you put the key in and turn it, if this is the problem sometimes if your lucky take the steering shaft shroud off and move the little cables about that go into the ring that fits around the ignition switch and it may work if not a new transponder is required. I have known this little trick to work.

The ignition key in 2002 Toyota Sequoia won't turn. Do I need a new lock cylinder or should I try other things first?
This is caused by the accumulation of metal shavings in the ignition switch cylinder from year's of internal wear. The cylinder can be removed and cleaned, oftentimes resolving the sticking issue. It requires some removal of panels and dismantling of components, which can be intimidating if inexperienced. A dealer will definitely only put in a new unit, as no one cleans parts anymore. Check YouTube under 'cleaning of ignition switches/cylinders' and you'll see a step by step procedure for the process. This can help you decide whether you want to tackle the job yourself.

The PATS transponder needs to be located by the key cylinder so it can "paint" the key with power to read the RFID tag on the key.

You can test if what you are talking about is the PATS transponder by holding another programmed key by it, and start the truck.

Did the wires get pulled apart when you were taking the key cylinder out ( i.e. check the other end ) ?

You are using the old key cylinder and the old programmed keys, right ?

There is an issue with your transponder key. Call a locksmith and have them reprogram the key you have into the computer. I do this all the time. Depending on who changed out the ignition they may have don't damage to the reader that surrounds the ignition. Sometimes they don't put it back in the right spot and it won't read the key.

Key stuck in ignition of 1996 Toyota 4Runner
This truck has a switch in the shifter assembly that tells the ignition the truck is in Park or not. If the shifter doesn't hit that switch right this can happen. Also, there is a component in the ignition (a solenoid) that allows the key to be released if the Park switch is pushed. To be sure it's one of these two things, try this.... Get the key stuck, then disconnect the battery. If the key comes right out, it's either the switch or the solenoid. Good luck!
