now yes, i will take the transmission is fubar into consideration but theres an .....however... idk about my cv joint, my car ONLY would make a loud ping noise when i move from a stop or brake ..... almost always when i put it into reverse. such as an engine mount sound, ... Vehicle: 2004 Eclipse Spyder GT. Loud knocking sound after oil change..

On a newer car this is a mode the transmission goes into when there is a bad problem with the transmission. It will usually go into 2nd gear where you can drive it safely to get it checked out but will not shift into any other forward gears.

possible that the sensor which senses the gear selector position is going bad.

Its likely the electronics and sensors inside the tranny.
Take it into a reliable tranny shop and pay for a diagnosis (only).

Worn ujoint?? worn pinon gear in rear end? idle set to high,or trans itself. does it klunk from 1st to reverse or all shifts...all shifts i'd guess transmission..

Who care about the Service soon light,since you stated you are a 1993 you are OBD 1,this is not a bad thing but if you pulled a code it would probable read 02 lean bank 1, The real problem is the whole transmission,Wont rev higher in other word its slipping,need to rev higher just to start moving ,well its slipping the solution is a rebuilt transmission,or a better car.

Need details.....kind of car,T-R-A-ns -mission,engine,front wheel drive or all wheel drive,etc. don-ohio (:^)

Take your car to a mechanic or your local auto parts superstore and have them read/scan the codes for the reason for the check engine light. A good place to start.

Check the engine and transmission mounts. While under the car, check the u'joints and driveshaft center support.
