SOURCE: cabin Air Filter

Open the glove box

Remove all of the contents in the glove box

On the right side, dis-engage the rod going to the split plastic pin on the glove box door

Squeeze both other sides of the glove box to defeat the stops that keeps the glove box from falling open

Observe the box in the area vacated by letting the glove box drop down, this is the heater box

Locate a rectangular cover (approx 7 " x 2"), it is located on the face of the box; facing you.

Pull this cover out towards you, the cabin air filter is located in the tray that is connected to this rectangular cover.

This should help you replace it.

The dash has to be removed to access the air filters. You are going to have to take to the dealer.

I recently acquired a 2006 Mitsubishi Galant SE. I attempted to change the cabin air filter only to discover the location is sealed. How do I change the filter?

This filter is an optional item and may or may not be dealer installed.

The procedures in this article are typical of most Misubishi vehicles.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

1. The filter is located behind the glove compartment. Open the glove compartment, (disconnect damper rod, if equipped) push on the sides while pulling down to release the latches. Allow the glove box to swing down on its hinges.

2. Remove the 2 air filter screws.

Some vehicles may not have an installed cabin air filter, but may have a sealed filter compartment. In such cases, the sealed compartment will need to be punched-out and a new air filter frame acquired before a cabin air filter can be installed.
NOTE:
The filter is optional and may not be installed in all vehicles. If the filter compartment is sealed as shown, use a flat head screwdriver to punch through the perforated plastic cover. Some vehicles may not have the filter frame pre-installed in the compartment. If so, accquire the filter frame before installing filter element.

3. Remove cabin air filter. Remove the old filter frame (if present) by sliding it out towards you. Remove old filter from its frame and install new filter, ensuring that Air Flow arrow is pointing down.

4. Install in reverse order.

My 2004 mitsubishi galant isnt blowing cold or hot air.

If it has a cabin air filter the filter could be blocked.
It could also have a stuck or faulty blend door that directs air flow thru the HVAC box.

Removing the cabin air filter on a 2001 mitsubishi galant

Open the glove box and empty the contents. gently push the glove box to the left and slide the stop toward you. Now slide the box to the right to get the left stop unhooked. Letting the glove box hang, look at the long thin plate on the fan shroud and undo the two screws holding it in. Now you can slide the cabin filter tray out of the fan shroud and replace the paper element. If you look at the fan shroud and see the rectangular slot but there are no screws in it , the cabin air filter has not been installed in your model. The rectangle can be cut out with an Exacto knife and the cabin air filter can be installed in the slot. You can purchase the cabin air filter tray, cabin air filter, and mounting screws at the Misubishi dealer. I purchased one out of an Eclipse at a salvage yard for $5 , washed it, and installed a new $10 dollar aftermarket paper element. I no longer have dust on my dash and it only cost $15.

I am trying to figure out how to change the cabin air filter on a 2002 Mitsubishi Galant (4dr, 4cyl). I pulled the glovebox and I have looked behind it, but I'm not seeing anything that looks like a frame...

Remove the glove box lid.
Use a knife to cut a section from the top of the blower motor housing, along the perforated lines as shown.ad61dd2.jpg

Install the filter with the air flow directional arrow pointing down.

there should be two screws with your new replacement filter to hold it in place.

if you are unsure or this picture doesn't look like what you have in the car I recommend a Air Conditioning shop do the repair.

Air conditioning system musty smell when used

There should be a cabin filter. Call the parts store to see if they stock one for your car in particular.

Cabin filters are located in stream of the outside air flowing in. I know on a '99 Galant, you just had to take out the glove box, loosen two screws, and out she slid.

It'll be right near the blower motor, above the passenger's foot rest, behind the glove box. Simple hand tools will do it.

Be careful when pulling it out, as it may have leaves and acorns or fur all over it. Simply slide in the new filter and you're done.

You'll be surprised at how much better it'll smell, and how much harder your A/C and heat will blow without the constriction of a dirty filter.

Most cars have the cabin filters behind the glove box, but if not there, then they'll have them under the hood, on the firewall, on the passenger side. Usually inside a small black plastic box.

If your car DOESN"T have a cabin filter, then the musty smell is stuff that is sitting in the heat/ AC system. You can try spraying pine sol or Febreeze down the air intake hole for the system. Mind you, this is not the same as the air intake for your cars engine!

The air intake for the cabin filter will be on the passenger side, under the hood, most likely under a plastic cowling of sorts.

Good luck!
