sounds like where the water pump meets the engine has warped or the gasket has been blown. Since the water pump has to come out anyway to fix it then i would suggest replacing the pump. It is 30 to 40 more.

SOURCE: how do you change a

Just did this over the weekend with my 2001 Nissan Altima. First, remove the negative battery cable to prevent shorting. Drain the radiator by removing the drain screw. To gain access to the water pump, I had to remove the upper radiator hose to the engine, unattach the reserve tank hose from the radiator and take out the reserve tank, remove the alternator and the lower alternator bracket because it blocks access to one of the water pump bolts and move the serpentine belt out of the way. This should give you free access to the six bolts that attach the water pump. You will probably have to hit the water pump with a rubber mallet or some other tool to break the sealant on the water pump, but it should then just come off. The hardest part of the job for me was removing the bolts for the alternator bracket because they were on extremely tight. Reinstall your new water pump after applying sealant to all parts that will attach to the bracket, and your ready to put it all back together. If you have the right tools, this should take probably 4 or 5 hours to complete.

Coolant leak

Pull your oil dipstick and look at the level and appearance of what's on the stick.

If the oil level is WAY high, and it looks like chocolate milk, that's where your coolant is going.

It means either the head gasket is blown, or the cylinder head, or the engine block is cracked.

I think my water pump is leaking on my 98 nissan altima

Very possible. The water pump will be run by the timing belt behind the engine cover and on the same side of the motor as all your external belts. Make sure there are no hoses close by that could be leaking and if not it will probly be the water pump. Usually they will make a noise when they are failing. Remeber if it is just a drip and it is hot outside if you run your air conditioning it will drip water from the condenser as well.

You have a timing chain no belt. Changing is not necessary unless there is a failure. Water pump will need changing when it leaks.
